Scotch College - Headmaster's Newsletter

Chairman's Reflections

Leadership

It is very unusual for the Chair of Council to write to you as part of the newsletter, but given the wonderful recognition that Rev Andrew Syme, and Scotch College received last week, I thought that it was important that on behalf of Council I did.

Andrew was awarded the 2009 Australian Award for Teaching Excellence by a Principal. He will tell anyone who listens that it is an award which reflects the strength of the Scotch College Executive and staff, and he is correct. But it is also about leadership, Andrew's leadership of this school and how, through outstanding leadership, Scotch College can claim to be at the forefront of boy's education in Australia.

Andrew personifies great leadership and it is reflected in many ways. He is a man who has the highest degree of integrity, and a set of principles by which he conducts himself that I greatly admire. He is strong when required, but like great leaders, is not afraid to seek advice and admit his own shortcomings. Andrew is prepared to make the hard calls, knowing that it may not be popular, but that it is the right thing to do. He takes his role seriously but not himself, and he has a wonderful capacity to be contemporary. This manifests itself in his relationships with the boys at Scotch, and his strong commitment to continue to develop learning at Scotch through innovative new practices.

The accolade bestowed on Andrew will not sit that comfortably with him, but the judges got it right! It recognises his outstanding work at Scotch College, and in education, and is thoroughly deserved.

While Andrew Syme is a person who is not materialistic; his contribution to the Scotch community over more than 10 years, and to our boys, has been very material. We all look forward to that contribution continuing.

SEASONAL INFLUENZA [TOP]

The influenza virus that circulates each year causes an infectious disease known as influenza (flu). Symptoms include fever, headache, muscle aches, fatigue, cough, sore throat, stuffy or runny nose. The flu is easily spread by tiny droplets released through talking, coughing and sneezing. Good health habits can greatly reduce the chance that you will pass the flu on to others. We also ask that students displaying symptoms of a 'flu like' illness remain at home until they are well. They should also avoid public places and close contact with others, especially children. Thank you for your assistance with this matter.

Senior ensembles have begun developing their new programmes for the new academic year, with new ensemble directors in some cases. It is pleasing to see all of the boys involved in their large ensembles. The Senior Concert Band has grown considerably this term and has performed brilliantly at the Senior Assemblies so far this term. They received many favourable comments after their performance at the Senior School Assembly prior to the Year 12 March Out.

All Junior and Middle School classes are heading for another busy term with a focus on performance. The Year 4 classes performed their musical 'The Mice from Outer Space' to an appreciative full house in the Chapel on the 2 and 5 November. The boys sang proudly and loudly wearing their mice costumes and masks as they recounted the tale of an encounter between earth mice and spice from outer space!

Year 3 is working on a Christmas play entitled "The Nativity" that will be performed in the Chapel on the 24 and 26 November at 2.30pm.

Years 5, 6 and 7 are preparing special choral pieces for Speech Night and Presentation Afternoon and Years 5 and 7 have also begun their sound-scape pieces as part of their composition assignment for Spring Term.

Upcoming Events

The Middle School Jazz band, together with Brass and Piano performances will be presented at the Middle School Assembly on 13 November.

Year 3 Christmas Musical will be staged on the 24 and 26 November.

The Junior Middle School Christmas Concert will be held on Friday 20 November at 6pm. This will be an enjoyable evening of community Christmas Carol singing and ensemble performances.

Final Graduation Assemblies and Speech Night will be held in the first week of December with a variety of ensembles performing at the different events.

IMPORTANT POINTS TO NOTE [TOP]

It recent Assemblies I have spoken with the boys about five essential words that underpin our daily lives in the Junior School. These words are:

  • Believe
  • Imagine
  • Enjoy
  • Persist
  • Laugh

It has been a joyful experience to wonder through the College grounds and capture the boys practising these admirable traits. I encourage you to discuss what it means to incorporate these key ideals into our daily lives with the boys at home. I am sure you will capture and appreciate many special moments in the coming weeks.

STUDENT NEWS [TOP]

We would like to extend our congratulations to Blake Lindquist. The Women & Infants Research Foundation received a very special donation last month from Blake Lindquist - Year 5L. Blake committed one day of his time to running a sausage sizzle and made a staggering $1000. This donation is being used to purchase a Jet Ventilator, which is a special machine that helps very premature babies breathe "Angel Breaths" as not to cause any damage to their tiny organs and lungs. Due to Blake's donation the Foundation will purchase the first ventilator earlier than expected, which will make a huge difference to babies and their families needing care at King Edward Memorial Hospital.

YEAR 5G NEWS [TOP]

Where has the year gone? The boys in 5G are preparing to leave the Junior School and are anticipating the exciting challenges of life in the Middle School. It has been an incredible journey and one of the highlights this term has been the camp to Moray. The boys had a fantastic couple of days being involved in team building activities, bush walks and an Aboriginal Culture session. A stand out moment was learning a great technique to light a barbeque from Mr Sullivan. The boys cooked their sausages to perfection. Ms Hawter said that the after dinner clean up was one of the best she had seen - take note parents! The boys should feel so proud of how they maturely and cooperatively they behaved on camp. A huge Thank You to Miss Hawter and Mr Sullivan for organising this fantastic experience.

INFORMATION LEARNING TECHNOLOGY [TOP]

Cybersafety is a topic that is of keen interest to us all, both at school and at home. This week a Muffin Afternoon was held where interested Junior and Middle School parents had the opportunity to participate in a discussion on many aspects of the issues involved, including cyberbullying.

With such an innovative ILT program as the one which we have at Scotch it is important that boys not only have the chance to explore the opportunities that are available from online leaning and communication but that they are guided to understand and manage the issues that are inherently part of such activities.

The School's 21st Century Technology Skills Matrix for Learning, which is currently being introduced to staff, is the guide for ensuring that teachers have the best tools and knowledge to enhance student learning in a safe environment.

Two particularly valuable online resources that can guide parents to consider all aspects of Cybersafety at home can be found at these links.

FRIENDLY SCHOOLS & FAMILIES [TOP]

FRIENDSHIP AND SOCIAL SUPPORT

A child with many good friends is less likely to be bullied than a child who is often alone or who has only one friend. Children who bully others are careful to avoid those children who have assertive and supportive friends.

HOW CAN PARENTS HELP THEIR CHILDREN TO MAKE FRIENDS?

  • Make sure that your children play with other children at school, at home and in your neighbourhood.
  • At home, encourage your children to talk and maintain contact with their extended family - uncles, aunts, cousins and grandparents and to talk to adult family friends.
  • Invite other children over for visits to show your children what to do to make their guests feel welcome.
  • Help your children to make new friends in different friendship groups by encouraging them to develop other interests and hobbies, such as sport, Scouts, dance, drama or music - outside their group of school friends.
  • Take your children on holidays to places where there are other children who are of a similar age.

FRENCH NEWS [TOP]

In Year 5, the boys have been hard at work creating a plan of their dream home. Once their blueprint was completed, the boys had to label all the rooms correctly in French. With the help of Mr. Stephens, we were able to use technology in order to further enhance the learning experience. Using the laptops, the year 5 classes were able to take photos of their work in Photo booth and then upload their work to their personal Wiki pages. They then recorded their voices describing their homes in French and also included these files to accompany the photos. The results are terrific so please take a look at Les maisons de rêve!

The French student of the week for the last fortnight is Michael Youngleson of 4N.

His polite, friendly nature and willingness to listen and follow directions have all

contributed to his success in studying French. He contributes effectively to class activities, and is also able to work independently.

PE NEWS [TOP]

Boys in Years 3 to 5 will be involved in a range of international games over the next weeks. The boys in Years 1 and 2 will be continuing to concentrate on Fundamental skills over the next few weeks, in particular revising throwing, catching and running. Apart from Physical Education lessons boys in Years 5 to 7 will be participating in Sport on Thursday afternoons against Christchurch and Wesley. Fixtures are placed on the website each week and I hope to see parents out enjoying sport with their boys.

JUNIOR SCHOOL RESOURCE CENTRE [TOP]

As the school year nears its end the pace increases. The boys are still borrowing and keeping the Library staff busy. I am delighted with the boys who have been making a huge effort to find books that have been missing. Rewards have been claimed by the successful searchers and there are still rewards available for more "finds."

The summer holidays are the only time of the year when borrowing is not allowed so I encourage parents and boys to use their local library for their reading material. Libraries are free to join, with the only cost from some libraries coming from the purchase of a borrowing card.

ART NEWS [TOP]

On Wednesday night in the Dickinson Centre, the Scotch Community was invited to attend "Inspirations," a Year 1 - 12 Arts Exhibition. It was well attended and thoroughly enjoyed by all! If you could not attend the Opening but do not want to miss the opportunity to see boys' artwork en masse the exhibition will remain open for a week.

What impressed me was the diversity as well as the connections between the works from boys as young as 6 and as old as 17. Year 2 boys have wonderful wildflower observation drawings/tonal paintings sitting beautifully alongside Year 10 black and white lino prints of wildflowers. There were wooden life size models of skeletons created by 7 year old boys sitting alongside magnificent paintings and sculptures of skeleton forms produced by Senior School boys.

Viewing a snapshot of works created by boys in the arts area of learning gives us insight into how the boys themselves view the world. It is an exciting and quite a humbling experience and I would encourage everyone to try and see the exhibition before it is dismantled. Please be aware that there may be examinations running concurrently in the DC throughout the week and we need to be mindful of this.

It is lovely for me to see past Junior School boys' artwork continuing to develop in the Middle and Upper Schools. I also think it is a great opportunity for boys and parents to appreciate other boys' talents and interpretations. The overall artwork was varied and impressive reflecting knowledge, skills and imagination. It is a thrill to see for boys to see their artwork mounted or displayed in an exhibition and it takes it to a new level. It is exciting for the boys to receive positive feedback about their work.

Finally, it is important to acknowledge the importance of having an audience for your artwork and to be able to receive feedback. Thank you to all the parents, friends and family members who provided this support to the boys. Thank you also to all the staff members who came and supported this arts event or who may take the time to go with their classes and view the exhibition over the week.

A special thank you to a wonderfully supportive, hard working group of parent helpers who have been behind the scenes helping me sort, frame, label and put together the artwork for the Junior School contribution to this whole school initiative: Mieke Cranfield, Emma Plummer and Lesley Millar.

Middle School Matters

FROM THE MIDDLE SCHOOL [TOP]

Surfing has been the focus of the Middle School over the past two weeks. The Year 6's have been to Camp Lancelin and their Friday's assembly item was very informative. The boys were up for the task of some challenging waves, erecting sleeping accommodations and of course, washing dishes. I'm sure all of the above skills continued to be developed under the managing guidance of their Mums and Dads. This week, the Year 7's have been seen with sun screened faces, flowered boardies and multi-coloured thongs as they headed for Trigg Beach to catch watery mountains and put their toes on the nose.

It is most exciting when talent is discovered and in this case, it is a talent that doesn't always get a lot of exposure (excuse the pun). Last year, Harry Wiffen was runner up in the annual Subiaco Photographic competition. This year, Harry received the fantastic news, while he was in Singapore, that he won first place in the Primary School Category. There were over 200 applicants and Harry's optical illusion titled "Thumps Up, Riley" took top honours. Harry received a substantial monetary prize and had the opportunity to meet the Mayor of Subiaco, Heather Henderson.

Congratulations Harry.

PERSONAL PROJECT PARS [TOP]

The Personal Project officially began for Year 10 students on Tuesday 27 October. Students met their Supervisors for the first time and were given specific information about organisational aspects of the Project. They received a Process Journal file and several booklets. They began to complete the 'Getting Started: The Application Process' activity sheets.

Another two conferences are scheduled for this term, in Weeks four and six. Details of the meeting times for Week 4 are available on the Project noticeboard outside the BRC. Students are encouraged to investigate their topic during this time and plan their project. Once students have identified a topic they need to complete an Application Form (provided in the Journal) and return it to their supervisor or the Project Leader. STUDENTS MAY NOT BEGIN THEIR PROJECT UNTIL THEIR TOPIC IS APPROVED. These forms will be returned to the students, once approved. The deadline for changes to their topic is 30 November, 2009 but their application can be submitted anytime before this date. After this date topics may only be modified, rather than completely changed.

Although this is called a 'Personal Project,' to be completed in the students own time and there is an expectation they will respond to their topic in an original and personal way; students are encouraged to acknowledge any problems and seek help to resolve them. Some will experience difficulty managing their time and focussing their efforts. Supervisors will intervene at nine specific times during the Project to ensure the students under their care are complying with the published deadlines.

Parents may wish to discuss the contents of the Process Journal file with their sons. The first tasks involve time management strategies and breaking down the project into manageable tasks. Their Process Journal booklets contain checklists which indicate the specific tasks students need to complete before each conference with their supervisor.

If you have any queries regarding the Personal Project please don't hesitate to contact the Personal Project Leader, Ms Barbara Stout at projectleader@scotch.wa.edu.au.

Prospective Architecture Student for 2011

John XXlll College and the University of Western Australia are co-ordinating an academic extension programme for students entering Year 12. The students will join students from other metropolitan schools to work in a design studio. The studio will take place in the Faculty of Architecture, Landscape Architecture and Fine Arts at UWA in the week beginning 18 January 2010. At present I am calling for expressions of interest from students.

Students need not be Visual Art students to benefit from this opportunity. It is a wonderful opportunity for students to experience stimulating intellectual challenges in a creative, collaborative environment. It will be intense and rewarding. Students should complete a project that will result in an exhibition with other students' work at UWA. If you have any queries about the studio please contact Annette Pedersen on 93830435, or email: pedersen.annette@johnxxiii.edu.au. or see Mr Frusher for more details.
