Headmaster's ReflectionsTHE INSIGHT OF YOUNG MEN
They also feel one of the important characteristics particular to Scotch is the breadth of opportunity they have (School Value - Breadth of Experiences of Learning). Finally, boys tried to express the difficult concept that while Scotch is a school which values its traditions such as Marching and Pipe Band, it has a very contemporary approach to education, an important benefit in preparing them for the world they are about to enter. The examples of Marching and Pipe Band continue to be named as the longstanding symbols of tradition and the new Science, Design and Technology block, the advancements in Information and Technology across Junior, Middle and Senior Schools, and the Leadership Programme are recognised as examples of the School's contemporary approach to education. It is exciting to hear boys reflect on their personal experience and the meaning they assign to that experience. My hope is that parents take the opportunity to constantly reflect with their boys on the experiences they are having. While these may be sometimes difficult and painful, I hope there is a great deal of joy in the maturing of our young men. In recent weeks, we have received feedback from parents pertaining to this new documentation. A summary of the written results are contained below: Feedback Results
We would like to thank all parents for their feedback, both written and verbal. We value and appreciate the diversity of comments received and hope to continually refine our documentation to ensure we reflect a clear summation of each boy's progress as they move through the Junior School. STUDENT NEWS [TOP]We would like to extend our congratulations to Alexander Perry 5G, who has been selected to represent Western Australian in the 2009 State Schools Diving Team. He will represent the State at the National Competition in September. We wish him every success in his endeavours. YEAR 2 NEWS [TOP]Working Together to Play Together Year 2 have recognised the need for all boys to have common sets of rules and guidelines when playing games during recess and lunch as a positive way for resolving conflicts or arguments during particular games. Already the boys have engaged in collaborative practices to organise a common set of guidelines for the playing of handball, King of the Pack and playing in the Jungle environment located near the Year 2 classroom. More recently the Year 2 boys invited the Year 3 boys to also participate in a similar collaborative experience to outline some acceptable behaviour and activities to ensure all boys had equitable understanding of their use of the play equipment located near the Year 3 rooms. Together the Year 2 and 3 boys created a general set of rules in mixed groups. These were placed in a collective list and then voted upon by each boy in Year 2 and 3 to determine whether they thought the rule was a good one or not. Then the votes were tallied. If a rule was given a majority vote then it was agreed it should be included, if it didn't have a majority vote then it was discarded. The Year 2 and Year 3 boys have now established a common set of rules and guidelines for the sharing of a play area in the school. A great example of working together to play together! INFORMATION LEARNING TECHNOLOGY [TOP]1:2 Laptop / Virtual Classroom ReviewTerm 3 is shaping up as another exciting learning period for staff and students in the Laptop programme. The availability of learning technologies such as laptops, flip cameras and virtual classrooms is enabling teachers and students to explore wonderful new learning opportunities. For example, the Year 5 PYP Exhibition virtual classroom is rapidly evolving around the topic of "Energy - The Future is in Our Hands". Please click here to view this story. Parents can access virtual classrooms like the one mentioned above via the generic login - wikiparent which has the password - Parent1 (Note the capital P). In this example, staff have recently introduced students to a Carbon Footprint spreadsheet that has enabled the boys to check their manual calculations while providing a comparison of maximum, minimum and average carbon footprints between classes. Using this tool the boys have been able to engage in high-level discussions around such questions as "Does your age effect your carbon foot print?" and "Is your height related to your carbon footprint?"
They have been able to gather data from their classmates, enter it into their personal spreadsheet and upload it to their personal virtual classroom page to share this with their other classes, teachers and parents. The excitement that this has generated among staff and students has been very palpable, primarily because of the ease and speed with which information can be shared, collaborated on and peer reviewed. This is but one example of how teachers have been able to enrich good learning activities through the use of learning technologies. Watch this space for more information about the exciting learning activities teachers are designing to take advantage of the learning technologies the boys now have at their fingertips. Mark Stephens Laptop Trial Coordinator FRENCH NEWS [TOP]In Term 3, French class will focus on the unit of inquiry ' From field to table'. The boys will be acquiring vocabulary related to food in French. They will also be learning how to give their opinion about food and sentences to use when in a restaurant setting. We will also be looking at the cultural similarities and differences of eating habits between French and Australian children. The boys will be creating a bilingual food menu for a special activity which will take place in Week 8. At the end of the Term, the boys should be able to show understanding of single words presented in clear script of vocabulary related to food. They should also be able to copy single words correctly and label items. The French student of the week for the last fortnight is James Crawford in 1W. James enthusiastically participates in class and is a positive role model for others by trying to use only the French language when communicating in class. PE NEWS [TOP]The Year 4 boys will compete in a Walla Rugby carnival at Guildford Grammar on Thursday 13 August. Details have been sent home with the boys. We will again be playing against Christ Church Grammar and Guildford Grammar. Parents are asked to help out on the day by offering to help look after teams on the day. I'm hoping for the same fantastic response I've had all year. In other sports news, the Years 5-7 Sport fixtures come to an end on 13 August, with our A teams involved in an all day Winter Lightning Carnival against the other six PSA schools. All other teams will have a normal fixture against Hale School at home. In Week 5 the Junior and Middle School will hold the annual Inter-House Cross Country on Tuesday 18 August followed by the IPSHA inter-School Cross Country on the Tuesday 25 September. Athletics follows Winter Sport and this year the Junior School and Middle School will have separate carnivals held in Week 9. The Middle School carnival will be held on Wednesday 16 September. I look forward to seeing many parents and family members at both events. I wanted to acknowledge that many families have assisted and got on board with this project and that comes with a whole set of problems such as: how to transport and collect a range of materials from the street verge, time dedicated to coming in and helping during art classes, odd trips to Dick Smith and hardware shops and visits to grandparents' places for added expertise to name a few. I appreciate all the help and interest provided by families in conjunction with the art programme running here at school. It made me question, with all the frustrations, problems and disappointments faced by the boys, is it worth doing a big project like this? Once all the robots started "coming to life" and were completed, the boys' enthusiasm answered that question for me. Not only the boys from their own class but each class coming into the Art room has been enthralled with the results and loved engaging with the robots. I also worried that those that are big or with special features like movable parts would get all the attention and seem more impressive but that also was not the case, as each robot has a feature that makes it unique and noticeable. The robots have really impressed me and as much as I will be sad when they are no longer with me in the Art room (mostly as they are dominating the space), I am so pleased that all boys will have a visual record of the robot in their Art folder. This is courtesy of parents like Mrs Lorimer (Matthew Gagen), Mrs Claxton (Timothy Claxton) and Joe Sorrell (Jack Sorell) who took great photos and Miss Marshall for helping to print and file them into the boys folders. Thank you very much for turning out to our first Assembly of the term and witnessing this semester's House Seniors receive their House Seniors' Badge. It is an important feature of life in Middle School and the boys were justifiably proud and appreciative to stand before you and receive their gold badge. The orange Integrity IBO Attitude banner was in the spotlight last week following a great discussion with some Year 7 boys. They very clearly let me know that they felt to be regarded as a most trustworthy and reliable student was more important than being seen as the most academic or sporting student in the school. Brainstorming out what Integrity meant we came up with the following definitions;
Acting with integrity is the forerunner to gaining trust and respect. It was very pleasing to listen to our Year 7 boys rate this attribute as highly as they did. Regards Richard Ledger Head of Middle School YEAR 6D CLASS NEWSPAPER [TOP]As presented at last Friday's assembly, the big item to look out for in Week 6 will be the 6DM Newspaper Project. Pulled together by Editor in Chief Hamish De La Hunty, the newspaper features sections on Motoring, Sports, Finance, Food, Games and Entertainment, National, International and Local News and a much anticipated Comics section, all produced by the enthusiastic 6D newshounds. The 6DM Project will be published in hard copy and online formats. TOURNAMENT OF THE MINDS [TOP]This year Scotch College, in conjunction with PLC, is preparing four teams for the annual Tournament of the Minds competition. Tournament of the Minds is a team's problem solving challenge where students are given scenarios they need to think through and prepare a dramatisation of their response within 60 minutes. Last week's practice example that elicited some tremendous responses was: If all of the world's story books vanish over night, how would we find out the reasons for their disappearance. Our regional qualifying round is on 29/30 August. MIDDLE SCHOOL SPORT UPDATE [TOP]Congratulations to the A Soccer team that played magnificently last week for their maiden win of the season, a nail biting, see-sawing match resulting in 4-3 win for Scotch over Guildford.
