Headmaster's ReflectionsDeath of Callum Tuckey (OSC 2008)The School is extremely saddened to announce the sudden death of Callum Tuckey (Year 12, 2008) from an asthma attack while working at Bramblety School in the United Kingdom on his GAP Year. It will come as no surprise to those who knew Callum that his constantly smiling face and positive approach endeared him to all at Bramblety School. Children from the school have written cards of their experiences with Callum which will be presented to the family in the UK. Brambelty will be holding a service next Friday in memory of Callum. Funeral Arrangements: Friday 25 September at 1:30pm in the Dickinson Centre. All are welcome to attend. October Commencement to Senior School Academic YearI wanted to write to parents as we look forward to the changeover of the new academic year next term. Parents will be aware that right throughout the School we have wanted to maximise the opportunities for students in Year 12 by effectively giving them an extra term of study. This necessitated a change of structure whereby the Senior School has a student-free week in a week when the Junior and Middle Schools return. As I said last year in my letter to all parents, I recognise that this can be difficult for some parents. However, I want to again address some issues that may be of concern. Traditionally in the Senior School, boys have had exams at the end of Term 4 and then left for the Summer break well before Speech Night. Realigning the school year has provided a number of advantages. Despite Week 0, it has actually meant an increase in teaching and learning periods for boys in the Senior School. While this is not immediately obvious because of Week 0, the actual effect increases the number of teaching and learning hours because it replaces some of the lost time in early December. It has also meant a significantly changed focus for boys with assignments being completed right up to Speech Night. Finally, and very significantly, Week 0 has allowed us to extend the Year 12 examination period to include the holidays as well as providing uninterrupted time with staff in Week 0, effectively creating an unbroken tutor period as boys prepare for their examinations. I acknowledge that Week 0 can be an inconvenience for some families, but I want to assure all parents that this was thoroughly investigated and the experience of the past year has assured us that we have made the right decision, both in maximising the focus of boys and in guaranteeing the teaching and learning time through the School. I look forward to the Senior School's beginning of the new academic year as we return from holidays. Rev'd A P Syme Headmaster All School MattersSTAFF CHANGES [TOP]
CHANGE TO ARRANGEMENTS [TOP]Friday 25 September, 2009Ordinarily the School would conclude the term with Yr 12's "Informal Marching" which is viewed by parents and the School. This is usually an opportunity for Year 12's to dress up on their way to Assembly and the boys are dismissed from the quadrangle in front of the Dickinson Centre and leave the campus. In view of the funeral arrangements for Callum Tuckey, House Marching, "Informal Marching" and Assembly will now be held at 8:45 am. This allows the School to honour the Year 12's request to have both their informal marching and the opportunity to attend this important service of remembrance. Year 12 boys will therefore be allowed to leave the campus around 9:15 am and we hope that many will return in their full school uniform for the service at 1:30 pm. ENVIRONMENT [TOP]An Ecological AfternoonOn Friday 4 September about 280 boys in Years 8 and 9 were involved in an afternoon of activities with an environmental focus. Boys were put into 5 groups partaking in either:
A black cockatoo was a surprise but welcome guest to one session to highlight the impact our decisions can unwittingly have on native fauna and flora. This enjoyable afternoon spent outdoors was helped by the fine weather. Sustainable SeptemberIn Chapel this week boys were presented with a short but visibly engaging discussion on Sustainability as part of the Church's Sustainable September initiative. The boys' imaginations were stretched by having to pretend all the worlds resources were represented by a jar of lollies. Once dipped into, the jar became progressively empty and there were increasing numbers of disgruntled customers eyeing the smaller number of remaining prizes. Essentially the purpose of the presentation was to have boys consider the long term impacts of short term decisions that are not sustainable . Having this type of discussion in Chapel helped to reinforce the understanding that sustainability is not solely a green theme, for the weird and wacky, but it actually promotes the values of interconnectedness and spirituality which are in fact universal. Please click here to download a presentation that demonstrates some of what was discussed, as do the short clips on the following websites which were imbedded in this powerpoint: Home Documentary by Yann-Arthus Betrand @ http://www.youtube.com/homeproject Global Oneness Project @ http://www.globalonenessproject.org/videos/goptrailer PYP Environmental AchievementsA very successful PYP exhibition was held on Wednesday 9 September. This had a strong environmental flavour this year. More can be read @: http://www.scotch.wa.edu.au/view/news-archive/the-future-at-the-pyp-exhibition/ Year 8 'Eco-Logic' C&S ClubThis group of young men has researched the need for, and feasibility of, installing a rainwater tank on the Maintenance shed next to the ovals. They have calculated the volume of water that would be saved, interviewed the Head Gardener, Mr Brown, determined the size and type of tank need and made preliminary contact with some companies regarding costs of purchase and installation of a sizeable tank. The club hopes to have a tank installed by the end of Spring Term, certainly in time for the summer period. If any member of the Scotch community has information that could assist this group to progress their project further (funding, materials, information, expertise) please contact Chris Menage on cmenage@scotch.wa.edu.au Be the Change SymposiumJoin motivated and enthused experts in their discussion on how to actively contribute to making our world more sustainable. This is a great opportunity to meet like-minded people or even just glean new ideas on how you can have an impact. In the words of Mahatma Gandhi "Be the change you want to see"! Please click here to download the flyer, or view the video at http://vimeo.com/1797725 for more details on the event. EnviroweekThis is the week to take on an environmental challenge or dare. From October 11 -17 (during the holidays), you can take a stand for our environment by changing your old habits and making a real difference for our environment. Challenges range from carpooling or catching the bus, riding your bike, thinking about low miles food, installing a water tank, planting native plants in your garden, starting a worm farm, or switching to green power. In the lead up to Enviroweek, you can invite family, friends and workmates to sponsor your challenge and make a donation to Conservation Volunteers. With your donation Conservation Volunteers will continue its vital work in habitat restoration around the country. Over the last year Conservation Volunteers has: Planted 750,000 trees Waterwise WaysIt is almost 2 years since Scotch embarked on a re-vamp of water facilities around the school when waterless urinals, pressure taps and a new irrigation system were introduced. These environmentally friendly upgrades were made possible largely due to the efforts of the previous Property Manager Mr John Dornan and the Bursar Mr Paul Davidson who applied for funding under the Federal Government Waterwise initiative. Given the time lapse it is now possible to do a simple comparative analysis of the relevant statistics and the results are very promising indeed. Consider below: Scotch Water Consumption (NB: 1 KL = 1000litres) 2007: 6 month period = 2579 KL 2009: 6 month period = 757Kl Total decrease = 1822KL or a 70% reduction in water usage This is a practical example of some of the work involving water that has been achieved and covers curriculum studies such as the Year 9 Waterwise Webquest the boys complete. This is a fantastic result which not only represents a financial win for the school but a very obvious environmental improvement for our immediate locality which includes a fragile lake eco-system. It is also an obvious demonstration of the inroads being made of an organisation embracing sustainability. For more information please visit the strategic plan website and view the Sustain+Ability Plan https://ishare.scotch.wa.edu.au . Request for InformationMany people in the Scotch Community have a wealth of knowledge and expertise on environmental issues or initiatives. If you are willing to add your name as a possible source of information that could benefit the students, staff or community of Scotch College please contact Chris Menage on cmenage@scotch.wa.edu.au WANTED: Volunteers For Cross Walk on Shenton RoadAs most of you may be aware, we have intermittent problems staffing the road crossing on Shenton Road which seems to have become prevalent in the last few weeks. Normally this is organised by the Traffic Warden State Management Unit and the WA Police Traffic Department and as such we have little control over the attendance of the crossing guard. In the past fortnight the crossing has been unattended on a number of occasions which poses a danger to all students crossing Shenton Road. We have had a number of discussions with the Traffic Wardens Unit and they inform us that they are having great difficulty getting traffic wardens in the western suburbs so this situation might continue for some time. As a consequence the College would like to arrange a team of volunteers to provide the service at our Shenton Road crossing. We are seeking mothers, fathers, grandparents to volunteer and we envisage setting up a fortnightly/monthly roster of one day per person or one shift per person i.e. a morning or an afternoon shift. The hours are from 08:00 - 09:00 and 14:50 - 15:50. Training and equipment will be provided by the Traffic Warden State Management Unit. In the interest of safety to all boys crossing Shenton Road, please consider the above request and if you would like to volunteer please contact .Bernadette Boisen BJBoisen@scotch.wa.edu.au or call 9383 6800 to place your name on the roster. UNIFORM SHOP [TOP]Opening Hours On Monday, 12 th October, the Uniform Shop will be open from 9am - 12 noon and 1pm - 4pm. It will be closed for the rest of the school holidays. The Spring Term is in the air and we look forward with excitement to all that lies ahead. PYP EXHIBITION [TOP]"The decisions we make regarding our energy consumption impact our ability for a sustainable community" In Week 8 of this term, it was our annual Year 5 PYP Exhibition. This year the inquiry focus was on sustainability. Year 5 boys were challenged to take action as a result of their learning. The boys were involved in eight weeks of research, supported by a large number of parent mentors and two experienced, dedicated teachers: Mrs Lopez and Ms Goodison. Year 5 students had the opportunity to present their work on Wednesday 9 September when parents, friends and families were involved in a range of activities that resulted from the boys' learning. The PYP Exhibition is a culmination of learning that has occurred throughout Years 1-5 of the Primary Years Programme. All students in Year 5 should feel extremely proud of their achievements and for the principled approach they applied to their learning. All students in Year 5 will be recognised for their successful completion of the PYP Exhibition at Assembly on Friday 25 September at 2.00pm in the Dickinson Centre. Most important for the boys of Year 4, has been the fantastic news that one of their own, Bryce Edwards, will be returning to school in Spring Term after having spent the past eight months combating Leukaemia. Bryce made an appearance at the hair-shaving event where he had the pleasure of taking revenge on his classroom teacher with a pair of clippers. This day meant a lot to Bryce and the boys of 4N and 4W cannot wait for Bryce's return in three weeks time.

Our Year 6 Buddies helped us to make posters to advertise our lemonade stall. We spent an afternoon juicing and preparing our lemonade and then sold it to the boys at recess and lunch. The final total raised was an impressive $145. Well done boys! Sue Hill ILT Coach FRIENDLY SCHOOLS & FAMILIES [TOP]THE METHOD OF SHARED CONCERNThe key to stopping bullying is getting those involved to talk about what is happening and decide on some ways to overcome the problem. The Friendly Schools and Families Programme recommends schools use the Method of Shared Concern to encourage children to talk about bullying incidents. Parents can also use this strategy at home. The Method of Shared Concern aims to change the behaviour of students who are bullying and to improve the situation for the student being bullied. This method helps students to develop empathy and concern for others and gives them strategies to help them get along better with others in the School and at home. Staff at our school are trained to use the Method of Shared Concern. WHAT HAPPENS IN SHARED CONCERN?1. Individual meetings are held with each of the students involved in the bullying incident: the student or students bullying, the person being bullied and any bystanders who may have seen what was happening. 2. Each student is asked about the problem and to suggest ways he or she personally could help to improve the situation. 3. The student being bullied is also given the opportunity to discuss what happened and encouraged to think of ways to improve the situation. 4. There are follow-up meetings, discussions and planning that give students the opportunity to change and improve attitudes and behaviours and to put these into practice in a supportive environment. Warwick Norman FS&F Coordinator FRENCH NEWS [TOP]Bonjour! During Winter Term, the Year 4 classes have been learning vocabulary related to cities and directions. They also worked on being able to pronounce and understand words orally as well as recognise them in their written form. The topics covered related to talking about places in a town as well as asking for, understanding and giving directions. The boys had to create their own map of a town and correctly label buildings and streets in French. They then had to use the map as a vehicle for practicing oral communication. Senior Choir 2010 Trip Proposal - TasmaniaExpressions of interest are sought from boys currently in Years 5 & 6, (Year 6 & 7 in 2010) and willing to commit to a Scotch College Senior Choir, to attend the Australian Youth Choir's Festival of Voices, to be held in Tasmania in July 2010. The Festival of the Voices provides an opportunity for our boys to perform and listen to other choirs from around the country. Mrs Leith and the Music Department are trying to gauge interest in this proposal with a view to confirming Scotch College's attendance at the Festival. A note went home with students last week; to date 4 responses have been returned. We need 20 boys to make a Choir and the trip viable. The House Heads sought a process whereby they could invite the student and his parents to go over the subject reports with the House Head, and in the process goals would be set for second semester by the boy after discussion with his parents. This scheme would allow the parents to get a face to face meeting with the House Head, and allow the boy himself to be an integral part of the reporting process. The focus group went through a PMI approach ( Pluses, Minuses, Interesting things!) and there was unanimous support for trialling this new approach for the mid-year reports in Summer Term 2010. The House Heads will flesh out the remaining administrative details and communicate those arrangements to you over the coming months. This is an exciting innovation that will be on trial for 2010 in the first instance, and we look forward to your involvement and comment during the year. SECOND HAND BOOK SALE [TOP]Next Wednesday 23 September, we will be providing boys and parents with the opportunity to involve themselves in the selling and buying of second hand books in the Dickinson Centre. This is a chance for boys entering Years 9, 10 and 11 to buy texts from boys leaving those year groups. The School will not be doing anything except providing the venue. Parents and boys are encouraged to bring texts, display them in year group areas, and meet prospective buyers. Please make sure you have a cash float with you. Last year's sale was a little disappointing with a mismatch of buyers and sellers, so we would encourage you to come along to save some money by spending some money! The sale will start at 5pm and close at 6pm. Please follow the instructions of Mr Freitag on the night as to where and how to set up. Last year boys took on a lot of the haggling and set up their wares on the floor for easy display. Book Lists Please note that book lists for 2009 and 2010 will be available on the Scotch website. CONCERNS OF LOCAL RESIDENTS [TOP]I would like members of the Scotch community to be aware that living within the community and having such a large parent and student body in the School means that there are pressures experienced by local residents in and around the School.
