Headmaster's Reflections

The Tidal Patterns of Parenting

(with apologies to Joyce Rupp for word changes)

The rolling rhythm

of the boundless sea

washes over

small, gray stones

Tossed upon the sandy beach.

Wave after successive wave

draws the surrendered stones

back and forth, back and forth,

until they lift their voices

in pebbled harmony.

Then the music of the stones

settles

into momentary

silence,

rests

in the cradle of the sea's cadence,

enraptured

in the pause before the great water

turns, moves them outward,

drawing them beyond

the comforting beach,

toward the vague darkness

of the deep sea's mystery.

In such a way, the Beloved

gathers the gray pebbles of my parenting,

stirs the endless rhythm of grace,

until my heart, too, circles and

tumbles with the cadence of love.

Like gray stones on the beach

my soul dances

in the movement, rests in the silence,

then takes the empyting journey

into darkness,

there to remain in trust,

waiting to be drawn

toward the welcoming shores

of consolation.

All School Matters

INFLUENZA, GENERAL HYGIENE & EXCLUSION FROM SCHOOL [TOP]

Following an update from the Department of Health and the Association of Independent Schools (WA) the College will be recommending the following practices:

In an effort to contain various strains of influenza, and in the best interest of all boys, parents and staff, the College requests that any student, staff member or parent experiencing fever (i.e temperature greater than 38°c) AND one or more of the following symptoms: cough, sore throat, runny nose or congestion, generalised aches, should be excluded from School and /or School events until free of symptoms.

ALSO any student or staff member experiencing diarrhoea and / or nausea or vomiting AND one or more of the cold / flu symptoms listed above, with or without fever, should also be excluded for a minimum of seven days or until well (whichever is the greater).

Could parents assist the College in encouraging their son/s to practise good hygiene and minimise cross-infection by covering their mouth with tissues when coughing or sneezing and disposing of these into bins after use. If tissues are unavailable it is preferable to cough into the crook of one's arm instead of hands.

Hands should be washed thoroughly, and frequently, with soap and water. DeBug, Aquium or other sanitizing hand lotions are an excellent substitute and the small personal sized containers are easily carried in a blazer pocket or trouser pocket.

As is routine practice the sharing of water bottles, eating utensils etc is discouraged.

More information is available from the Department of Health website at www.public.health.wa.gov.au or call the National Human Swine Influenza Hotline on 180 2007.

If you require medical advice Health Direct can also be contacted on 1800 022 222.

Thank you for your continued support.

INDEPENDENT SCHOOLING IN AUSTRALIA [TOP]

The Independent Schools Council of Australia and AIS WA has provided information on the school size, funding & sources of income, religious affiliations, student enrolment, student teacher-ratios, teacher gender in independent schools across Australia.

The Snapshot 2009 - Independent Schooling in Australia document has been made available to the community on the Scotch website via the following link:

BULLYING SURVEYS [TOP]

We have completed bullying surveys from Years 6-10 over the last few months and the results have been disseminated to House Heads and other pastoral leaders. The recent Year 8 survey was most encouraging and would suggest that most boys at school have never experienced bullying and any bullying that does occur is relatively mild and low level. The boys who were mentioned a significant number of times are being counselled in the Senior School by their House Heads.

Any boy who was named several times as a person who may have experienced bullying is also being counselled. Parents of boys who are mentioned significantly as either bullies or being bullied will be contacted by House Heads.

Please rest assured that we are taking any bullying issues very seriously and staff will respond when they are informed or it is witnessed at the school. These surveys give us a really good measure of bullying on the campus. The figures in the Year 8 survey would suggest this year group is working well and the number of boys who will need to be counselled is the lowest we have seen yet.

ENVIRONMENT [TOP]

Tree Planting

Year 8 Science students took part in a mass tree planting session on Friday 7 August during periods 3 and 4. This activity was made possible due to the initiative and coordination of Mr Dan Quinlivan, with the support of the staff from the Science Department and Friends of Lake Claremont.

A repeat tree planting session took place on Friday 14 August with the Year 9 students after lunch.

This work does much to enhance the quality of the biodiversity around the fragile ecosystem on our doorstep that is Lake Claremont.

Reduce and Re-use

Scotch College in partnership with Earth Carers from Western Metropolitan Regional Council (WMRC) will be hosting a community event on Saturday 19 September where recycle paint will be made available. Each year the WMRC find themselves with several hundred half used cans of paint that they then need to have environmentally put into landfill. This is not only a costly and wasteful process but also potentially harmful in the long term too. In a bid to avoid this, and promote the "re-use" theme, a morning stall will be made available for the community to come and collect the paint in exchange for a gold coin donation. Any proceeds will be put towards a charity. If you are interested in volunteering your time to assist with the logistics on the day please email Chris Menage on cmenage@scotch.wa.edu.au . Watch this space for more info over the coming weeks.

Kitchen Garden

The school vegetable patch continues to progress slowly but surely under the stewardship (not to mention blood, sweat and tears) of Mr Brett Barrett, with able assistance from the Grounds staff and Mr Herb! It is hoped the first crop will be in by Week 7 this term.

National Threatened Species Day

As part of the Kings Park Wildflower festival, the Perth community is invited to attend a Call to Action for the National Threatened Species Day on Wednesday 9 September 2009 .

Please download the flyer for more information, or visit the National Threatened Species Day website http://www.environment.gov.au/biodiversity/threatened/ts-day/index.html.

Request for Information

Any member of the Scotch Community who has information relating to Environmental issues, events, programs or similar initiatives that could benefit the students, staff or community of Scotch College are encouraged to please contact Chris Menage on cmenage@scotch.wa.edu.au

IMPORTANT POINTS TO NOTE

As we move through another busy term I have taken an opportunity to reflect on the importance of sharing time together as a Scotch community. I have been delighted to note parents' support of so many important events that take place in the Junior School. One such important event you are welcome to attend is Junior School Assembly - these that take place on a fortnightly basis on a Friday at 2.00pm. Our assemblies are a wonderful time for sharing, celebration and presentation. I encourage you to attend and support these important Junior School occasions.

A highlight of the Junior School year will be our Presentation Afternoon for all boys and parents in Years 1-5. This event will take the place of Speech Night and will be held on Wednesday 2 December commencing at 2.00pm in the Dickinson Centre. We have elected to hold this event on the final afternoon of the school year and it promises to be a wonderful, formal occasion.

YEAR 3S NEWS [TOP]

Four boys in 3S bring this week's newsletter item to you. These boys participate in the after school Co-curricular chicken farm. I hope you enjoy their piece. - Mrs Stillitano

This term the boys from 3S have been doing a new Unit of Inquiry. Our Inquiry is called "From Field to Table". We talk about the products that come from farms to our tables. We have experienced having four chickens to care for. We feed them, we collect eggs and we hold them.

Chickens are a part of Field to Table because they lay eggs for us and we can also eat their meat. We can buy chicken meat from the supermarket or farmers' market.

Eggs are one of the products that come from farms.

Eggs can be eaten in three different ways: fried eggs, scrambled eggs and boiled eggs.

We had a visit from Old MacDonald's Farm we learnt about the different farm animals and the baby animal names. Pig's fat is very explosive and was used in bombs and is also used in make-up.

We have been very excited when learning about the different Field to Table activities.

INFORMATION LEARNING TECHNOLOGY [TOP]

Recently the Year 1's from Scotch and PLC shared class happenings by using technology available to them in their classrooms. Mrs Webster arranged for her class to link with the PLC girls at a particular time using ichat video conference and the interactive whiteboard. It was a great

HELPING YOUR CHILDREN DEAL WITH BULLYING

It is natural for parents to feel upset and want to protect their children if they are being bullied. However, an upset parent can often increase the involved child's distress.

Parent responses that have been found to be helpful are to:

  • Encourage your children to discuss the situation;
  • Be aware of your own responses and react in a calm, helpful and supportive manner;
  • Believe your children - it is important that your children feel confident talking to you about problems;
  • Tell your children that bullying is wrong and remind your children that they have the right to feel safe and happy;
  • Make sure your children know how to get help and support at school;
  • Help your children to make friends (having at least one good friend has been shown to reduce the likelihood and impact of bullying);
  • Talk to your children's teacher; and
  • Ask your children what they would like you to do.

PE NEWS [TOP]

On Tuesday morning the Junior and Middle School held the annual Inter-House Cross Country Carnival. The day started with the Middle School running in ideal conditions, as the Junior School took to the track the sky started to darken and by the time our littlest competitors (Years 1 and 2) took the field the rain started. Our Year 1s were half way through their race when rain, in a form usually reserved for the tropics, turned the Cross Country race into a swimming event. At the end of the day Andrew House ended up leading on the points table, the final results were:

The top 10 finishers in Years 4 - 7 will represent Scotch at the IPSHA Boys Interschool Cross Country Carnival on Tuesday 25 August at Trinity Playing Fields.

Athletics training has started and this year the Junior School and Middle School will have separate carnivals held in Week 9. The Junior School carnival will be held on Tuesday 15 September (this date has been moved so as not to clash with a Mothers Auxiliary meeting in Moray). The Middle School carnival will be held on Wednesday 16 September. I look forward to seeing lots of parents and family members at both events.

Book Week begins on Tuesday 25 August and many activities have been planned. There will be lots of competitions for all boys to enter and lots of prizes to win. Most of the activities will be related to the Book of the Year shortlist. All the boys will have the shortlist discussed with them over the next week.

On Thursday 27 August, we are holding a Book Week Parade for the Years 1 - 4 in the Music Room at the Junior School at 2.15pm. The theme for the parade is "Book Safari". Boys are invited to parade as their favourite character. The boys will need to bring their costumes to school and change into them at lunchtime.

ART NEWS [TOP]

WORKING WITH OUR IMAGINATION

Over the last four weeks, on a Monday the art room has been the meeting place for a mixed group of GTEC (Gifted and Talented for Early Childhood) students from Scotch, Wesley, St. Hildas and Penrhos.

They are boys and girls from Years 1 & 2 and this is the third time they have met as a group. The focus for these sessions has been Using Your Imagination through Language and Visual Arts. They have explored the works of Spanish artist Joan Miro and experimented with a variety of techniques and materials to simulate his semi-abstract style of artwork. Then they adopted some of the techniques to create their own artworks. The works were very expressive and exciting!

It was wonderful watching the different students approaching these activities and working both independently and collaboratively to develop greater understandings and skills in expressing self. It certainly developed the social and emotional skills of all students.

It gave them an opportunity to reflect on their own style of working and thinking, in comparison with the other students. Importantly, they had to learn respect and regard for others and their opinions, in an area of learning where there is really no right or wrong way of doing things, when presenting abstract ideas.

The students impressed with their ability to express themselves successfully in a variety of ways: verbally, visually and conceptually. They also showed initiative in creating extension works at home, after being exposed to a new idea or technique here at Scotch College. This reflects qualities of life- long learners: taking ownership of the learning and displaying drive to create and express beyond teachers' instructions.

Finally, working with such a small group of similar ability students highlights the point that within any one ability group you will encounter so many different learning styles. This can be a real challenge for schools and I would like to acknowledge the initiative of running such groups as one way of accommodating these differences, whilst being slightly overwhelmed at the reality of dealing with such diversity in school settings.

I would like to share some of the fabulous artworks. Enjoy the results of young children's minds and abilities, given both structure and freedom to explore, express and develop.

Middle School

Dear Parents

As we hit the midpoint of Winter Term the catch cry for Middle School boys right now is perseverance. Sticking with the things we find hard, having another go rather than giving up, seeing a task or a goal to completion is the IBO attitude we are on about right now. The rewards for persevering are many, but none better than the realisation that you can do it. It was an attitude well demonstrated by a big group of boys who didn't feature in the top 10 or top 20 in the Interhouse Cross Country event last week, who none the less stuck it out, didn't stop running, and completed the course. Sticking with our maths, spelling, humanities assignments and homework, getting it all done and in on time and to the best of their ability is what the next four weeks are all about for Middle School boys. This is the premiership quarter.

Battle of the Choirs [TOP]

The big event this week is the Year 1-7 Choral Festival or as the boys are referring to it, 'the Battle of the Choirs' This is a very recent innovation from the Music Department but going on student enthusiasm it looks like becoming an annual feature. Each class or year group has two songs to perform and they will be assessed on set criteria by a panel of expert judges. The Battle of the Choirs will be held in the Dickinson Centre commencing at 2pm this Wednesday 26 August. Family members are most welcome. Building on the enthusiasm for Choir, planning has commenced for a Year 6 & 7 Choir Tour to Tasmania in April 2010 to attend the Australian Youth Choir Festival. This will be something to watch out for.

Sport News [TOP]

Congratulations to Scotch College A Hockey team who went through the recent interschool Lightning Carnival undefeated and finished on top thanks in part to some outstanding goal work by Dylan Wood of 7N.

The top ten finishers have been rewarded with a place in the IPSHA Interschool Cross Country event next week.

YEAR 11 DANCE [TOP]

The School was delighted with the success of the Year 11 Dance held in the Memorial Hall on Saturday 15 August. Nearly all the year group attended, and the behaviour of the boys and girls was exemplary. I would like to thank the Mothers' Auxiliary and in particular Kerry Hollier for the fantastic amount of work put in before and after the event as well as on the night.

I believe that nearly 60 parents were involved in some part of the Year 11 Dance. We had 20 staff present on the evening and the combination of parents and staff ensured that the night ran smoothly and the young people had a great time. Although the weather was inclement, the outside area was well frequented and the braziers and overhead heaters were very much in demand.

It is very gratifying when the boys and their partners show the maturity and good sense to recognise an important school occasion and thoroughly enjoy it in a sensible and wholesome way.

Planning is just about to start for the Year 12 Ball for 2010 and I have no doubt that it will be a marvellous occasion.

FRENCH VISITORS [TOP]

Scotch has been very pleased to welcome seven visitors from France over the past three weeks.

These excellent students, staying with Scotch families, were mostly from Year 11 and have spent the mornings with us in classes. They have been helping all over, from teaching basic interview techniques to the Year 8's, to helping the TEE boys preparing for their Oral exams. Naturally we were pleased to spend time with them in the local French café -Choux - and they confirmed that the croissant there was truly French (which is a great compliment as it is a hard thing to accurately replicate!)

The visitors were also taken to Moray, and we are grateful to Mr Brogden and his team for looking after them down there on a wet and windy day. We were also very pleased with how our boys seized on the chance to talk to 'real French people' and how positive those classes were. The LOTE staff would like to thank the families for hosting these visitors.
