Headmaster's Reflections
The offer of the IB Diploma as been achieved without any fundamental change to staffing levels across the Senior School. The effect of this is that the School has broadened its choice of subjects and its opportunities for both boys and parents without any substantial change in staffing costs. This has come about through the excellent work of Mr Brad Watson in the Senior School and we are delighted that the School continues to provide a rich and varied choice for students and parents. It is understandable that when new programmes are offered, there is an assumption they come at a cost, particularly for those who are not involved in the programme. I want to assure parents, that through the diligent management of senior staff at the College, we have been able to provide a greater range of choice with no significant staff increase. Therefore, in the future we will be delighted to celebrate boys' successes in the WA Certificate of Education and the IB Diploma, just as we celebrate the variety of achievements for boys in the Co-curricular programme. Wherever boys find meaning, purpose and success, we delight in celebrating with them. I know parents join the staff in enjoying the broad, rich opportunities the boys have here at Scotch College. Rev'd A P Syme Headmaster All School MattersAn Open letter from Mrs Carolyn Stewart - In Search of Office Bearers for Mothers Auxiliary I have been a mum at Scotch for the past nine years and have had the opportunity to be involved in many of the various support groups that exist. Every one of these groups has had something important to offer but the underlying common importance was that we as parents were helping the boys and the school community. Showing our children, and perhaps each other sometimes, that undertaking a volunteer job or task can provide real and tangible, sometimes amazing, benefits. In 2006 I was lucky enough to be the President of the Mothers' Auxiliary. It was a busy year but in saying that, like for most of you, all my years seem to be busy! In 2010 I will be President once again (so it can't be too hard!). Frankly, in the first instance it was a position that I was pushed into and with 3 sons at the school, two still in the junior school, I felt that I had years before I would even consider such a position. On reflection I was incredibly lucky to have been given that early push. The people I met and interacted with including staff, students and other parents was wonderful and a far broader group than I otherwise might have experienced. I believe that this broad interaction has made for a richer ongoing experience for me at Scotch. I have written this open letter to the Scotch parent group to encourage someone to accept "my push", step up and volunteer to be vice president in 2010 and then president 2011. I am very confident that such a decision would be one that you cherish for the long term. If some of you are concerned about the demands of this role I can assure you that Georgie Taylor (our current president) is in the process of simplifying the operations and hence demands of the Mothers' Auxiliary and it is my intention to continue that in 2010. There is always wonderful support for all of our functions and as in most organizations the role is largely one of coordination. The Mothers' Auxiliary provides a much needed and valuable resource to the school, our boys and the school community including the Valedictory Dinner, Orientation Day and March Out. It cannot function without people taking on these official roles. I encourage every member of the school community to get involved in the support groups supporting your sons time at Scotch and especially I would love to hear from someone (or more than one) prepared to step up for the Mothers' Auxiliary. Yours sincerely Carolyn Stewart SECOND HAND BOOK SALE REMINDER [TOP]The Second hand Book Sale for boys going into Year 8 in 2010 is to take place: Date: Monday 30 November 2009 Time: 5.00 pm - 6.30pm Venue: Memorial Hall, Scotch College. UNIFORM SHOP [TOP]Opening Times Tuesdays 8.00 am - 5.00 pm Thursday 7.30 am - 11.30 am Fridays 7.30 am - 11.30 am ABSENCES [TOP]Please notify us by phone or email of your son's absence early in the morning of the day of his absence. We are telephoning the parents of all boys whose absence is not accounted for at the start of the day. Please help us by letting us know if your son is not at school on a particular day. Senior School AbsencesTelephone: 9383 6928 The Absentee Secretary will take your call or you can leave a message on the voice mail. Email: absentee@scotch.wa.edu.au Middle School absencesShould be reported directly to the Middle School Office on telephone: 9383 6957 Junior School AbsencesShould be reported directly to the Junior School Office on telephone: 9383 6874. When a boy returns to school after being absent, he should bring with him a note signed by a parent or guardian explaining the reason for absence. In the Senior School this note should be directed to the Absentee Secretary, at Reception. Parents should understand that an absence note is often not dealt with by Mr Williams when the boy is present, and as some signatures are virtually indecipherable, and in other cases the surname of the signatory is different from that of the boy, it is essential that the boy's name, initials, House and Year Group be given clearly in block capitals. There is a page in the Student Diary where parents may advise the School about student absences. Leave During the Day or Late ArrivalIf a boy needs to leave school during the day for an appointment, he will need a note from a parent explaining the leave. He should present this at the Front Office to the Absentee Secretary who will record his departure and return. Boys who arrive late to school (ie. after 8.35am) should similarly report to the Front Office to sign the Late File. Junior School MattersIMPORTANT DATES TO REMEMBER [TOP]

Head of Junior School Mrs C J Gamble STUDENT NEWS [TOP]We would like to extend our congratulations to Cameron McVeigh 4N who has been accepted into the Australian Youth Choir. Cameron has been offered a position with the Probationer Choir in 2010. We would like to congratulate Ronnie Fellows-Smith from Year 1, who was a winner in the Doodle 4 Google 'My Wish for Australia' competition. Out of the thousands of drawings Ronnie's drawing was chosen by judges Ken Done, Anne Geddes and Hugh Evans as one of the best 32 entries in the country - an amazing achievement. As part of the programme, his drawing will appear on the Doodle 4 Google site ( http://www.google.com.au/doodle4google ) for the Australian public to view and vote for their favourite in each year level. Voting has gone live, so everyone start voting for Ronnie's drawing. Ronnie along with his Mum will attend the finale in Sydney on November 10, 2009. This will be a fun day of activities that will acknowledge the student's achievement. YEAR 4W NEWS [TOP]Eat Yourself Around The World
During Winter Term the Year 4s looked at exploration and how it has changed the world. During class they had their own race around the world where each night a group of intrepid explorers had to find five facts on a particular country before moving on to their next destination. As a reward for all their hard work and a bit of fun we invited the Year 4 mums and dads to make a dish from various countries around the world so that the boys could live, breathe and most importantly, eat their way around the world. What a day it was too, like a good old-fashioned cook off, the mums and dads went to town. Pizza from Italy, nachos from Mexico, curry from India, hot dogs from America and a host of other delicious dishes were presented. What a great way to end the term and thanks to everyone who helped out! Scott Whiston Year 4W Classroom Teacher INFORMATION LEARNING TECHNOLOGY [TOP]Wow, what a memorable time Winter Term was for teaching and learning at Scotch College. We had everything from putting laptops into the boy hands for the first time, swine-flu-induced remote learning via our wikis, through to the excitement of our PYP Exhibition presentations and the Year 7 Singapore Tour capture on the web. For the first time, all of these experiences were enhanced by the use of mobile technologies, ushering in a new era of 21st century learning. For me, one of the most significant advantages of capturing learning experiences with the mobile learning technologies being introduced at Scotch (including laptops, iPod Touchs and FLIP video cameras), is the fact that learning experiences can "lives on" well after the event. This means that students and teachers alike, across the whole college, can continue to leverage each other's experiences providing excellent "side by side" comparisons with new learning. For example: 1. Students capturing their oral reading development in various audio recordings throughout the year can compare their first efforts with their last by simply playing back the audio recordings. Teachers can say "Boys, let's hear how much you have improved in your oral reading this year". 2. Photographs are powerful learning resources. Students can now easily use the photos that they take in one class as a stimulus for learning in another. Photos taken in a Physical Education class (say long jump) might be a starting point for a mathematics lesson on speed and distance. In this way our new learning technologies are opening, exciting possibilities for extending the value of learning experiences. If you have missed out on seeing some examples of how staff are using these technologies at the moment, try the following links: (username: wikiparent password: Parent1)

Fixtures are placed on the web each week and I hope to see parents out enjoying sport with their boys. Ken Dillon Head of Junior School Physical Education JUNIOR SCHOOL RESOURCE CENTRE [TOP]Spring Term is a lovely time of the year for the boys to be outside running around. It always seems quieter in the Library with fewer boys in playing games; however it is reassuring to see boys borrowing reading material more frequently. There are lots of new books available for them to peruse. A selection of the new books available:
It is important that the boys check whether they have any overdue books, both library and reading at home, so I would appreciate it if they are encouraged to have a search. Rewards are always offered. Kaye Turner Teacher/Librarian ART NEWS [TOP]ART SMARTIt has been an exciting month for budding artists at Scotch College Junior School. Big news is acknowledging Ronnie Fellows-Smith (Year 1) for his entry into the " Google4Doodle" Competition, being selected from thousands of entries nationwide, as one of the 32 finalist winners! This is an impressive effort. Ronnie and a parent have been invited to attend the finale event in Sydney in November and will be taken care of by Google. This will be a fun day of activities that will acknowledge the student's achievement. That will be a really special day for Ronnie, representing Scotch College in WA. It was run as an after school club where students had to design a logo for Google's Homepage, which reflected life in Australia and write an accompanying statement that described their "Wish for Australia." Ronnie wrote a lovely passage and really depicted Australia beautifully in his artwork titled "The Long Winding Road." Although it is not always important to win competitions, it is still good to acknowledge the clever skills and ideas of an individual; that have been special enough to stand out from a big crowd of about 5,000. Recently at assembly, Mrs. Gamble read the boys a story about Stanley the Stick Insect, who was not afraid to " stand out from the crowd". So Ronnie's achievements here are a lovely real life example of the morale of that story. As part of the programme, his drawing will appear on the Doodle 4 Google site ( www.google.com.au/doodle4google) for the Australian public to view and vote for their favourite in each year level. Voting will go live on Wednesday, October 21st. So get everyone voting for Ronnie's doodle! Friday, October 30 will host a gorgeous picnic Garden Party for the year 4 boys and their parents, to share their intriguing garden sculptures created based on the movie "Bridge to Terebithia". The boys have been working in conjunction with Amber Levien, a 4 th year Arts Student at Edith Cowan University to create artworks that involve part real life experience, part fact and part imagination. They will be displayed in amongst the school's garden as a wonderful setting for showing off the boys' artistic talents and flair. INSPIRATIONS , a Year 1 - 12 celebration of Media and Visual Art will be hosted in the Dickinson Centre for a week, with Opening Night on Wednesday, 4 November 6 - 8pm. It is glimpse across arts activities being offered at Scotch over 2009, with fine examples of work on show. Even if it does not feature your son's work, everyone is invited to attend and appreciate the artistic expressions of boys. It is always uplifting seeing artwork en masse and it is intriguing to view individual's interpretations of set tasks, given set guidelines and projects to work through. I look forward to meeting up at this celebration of Arts. A special thanks to parent helpers in gearing up for this exhibition: Meike Cranfield, Emma Plummer and Lesley Millar. Finally, a request for supplies for the artroom:

SMART CARDS [TOP]Senior School Students who require a new card or wish to replace a lost, stolen or damaged card should go to the Student Services Desk in the Senior School Reception area. Middle and Junior School Students should go to their respective Office Receptions to order and pick up their cards. PARKING AND DROP-OFF [TOP]Parents are reminded that space around the School is at a premium at pick up and drop off times. Parents are requested to take care when parking and not block the driveways of local residents. Particularly, parents and staff should be aware of new parking regulations that were implemented last year. These arrangements have been made by the Town of Claremont in consultation with Scotch College and our area neighbours. Parking signs and regulations are in place for thewestern side of Australind Street and the western side of Central Avenue between Shenton Road and Saunders Street. Both these areas will be "No Standing" at all times for other than permit holders. This means that these areas will no longer be available as "drop-off" areas for students or parking areas for staff and visiting parents. Rangers will be able to issue fines of $105 for each violation of the new parking regulations. Australind Street is very congested around 3.30pm and it is recommended that parents use other access routes to pick up their sons. COMMUNITY SERVICE [TOP]Tanzania Expedition 2010In July next year 30 students and staff from Scotch College and Presbyterian Ladies' College will travel to Tanzania in what will be the third joint expedition to that country. The trip will consist of three distinct parts: Service - restoring the Primary School in Matipwili village; Outdoor Pursuits - climbing Mt Meru (4500m); and finally, completing a Safari through Ngorongoro Crater and Tarangire National Park. The restoration of the primary school continues the works started last year when a four-classroom block was re-roofed, rendered and painted. A delicious morning tea was served on arrival and a tour of the neighbouring gardens was enjoyed by all, followed by a delicious lunch prepared by the committee. It was wonderful to see so many mothers at this event and to meet some new mothers, particularly from the Junior School, who had come along to see the wonderful facilities that Scotch offers to our boys at Moray. Thanks again to our committee. Volunteers for Orientation Day:Orientation Day is in the diary for Wednesday 28 October. Mothers' Auxiliary traditionally hosts both March Out and Orientation Morning Tea and it is through the generosity of our mothers that this is made possible. If you would like to help out for a couple of hours on Wednesday morning, please contact Jenny Willis or Georgie Taylor, on mothersauxiliary@scotch.wa.edu.au. PARENTS' ASSOCIATION [TOP]The Parents Association AGM was held at the Dining Hall on the 20 October. Many thanks to all those who attended. The Headmaster addressed the group and explained the building plans for the School over the next years and discussed some of the concerns about the issue of the iTouch for Years 11 and 12. Genevieve Cleary, the President, gave a review of the past year, what projects we had funded and the social events for the year. The Treasurer Peter Banaszak went through the accounts - we were all glad to hear they are still "robust". The Afters report by Mike Burrell was most interesting as we seem to be going from strength to strength with a steady increase in numbers over the last 3 events. The office bearers were duly elected and new members welcomed to the committee. The meeting closed at 21:30 HARVEST DINNER [TOP]All old boys and current parents are invited to join an evening to celebrate the Scotch Community on Saturday 14th November 2009.
