Scotch College - Headmaster's Newsletter

Headmaster's Reflections

As I have returned to School this week I have been absolutely delighted with the response of so many of the boys. I have enjoyed many conversations instigated by the boys themselves, with, "how was your holiday Sir?", or "tell me something about Europe, Sir". It has been a very positive and heartening experience to have the School full of boys again.

I want parents to know how delighted I am with the performance of staff during last term. It has certainly been a demanding term, particularly for members of the Senior Executive, who had to cope with a major reporting period simultaneously with the outbreak of swine flu. Many parents have congratulated me on my wisdom in being away from the School when this struck, but I have been exceptionally pleased with the way the School has managed a very difficult period under the wise guidance of Mr Freitag as Acting Headmaster.

As we begin this term, the Senior School Assembly will start slightly differently. We have been concerned for some time that we have not allowed both boys and parents visiting the School the opportunity to pay due respect to the raising of National and State flags. As a result we have installed three new flagpoles and have instructed the boys that, at the playing of the Pipes and the raising of the National flag, the boys will quietly come to attention and face the flag. I hope the parents who are standing on the balcony waiting to view the marching might also join the boys in showing respect for our National flag.

This week was particularly important because in the School we celebrated NAIDOC week. On Friday the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander flags were raised with the National flag. We had a 'Welcome to Country' from Mr Kim Collard who has been working with the staff on some indigenous cultural training. It has been a wonderful and exciting week to return to the School.

I thank both parents, boys and staff for their very warm welcome back to Scotch and I look forward with some excitement to the months and years ahead.

Revd A P Syme

NATIONAL RAIL SAFETY WEEK [TOP]

24-31 July is National Rail Safety Week.

WAIT AT THE GATE

When you are at a pedestrian rail crossing and the lights start flashing and the bells begin ringing, it means that the pedestrian gate is going to close. WAIT. A train is on its way.

Each year many people ignore these simple warnings and place their life in danger.

The consequences of crossing the tracks after the gate has closed are very serious injury, or even death. It also creates apprehension for the drivers of our trains because they have no idea of what will happen next when they see someone climbing over the gates to cross the track.

If you use a pedestrian rail crossing these are the things to remember

  • Wait at the gate when a train is approaching
  • Cross the track only at the pedestrian crossing
  • Stay between the yellow lines on the crossing pathway

For more information about travelling safely and responsibly on Transperth trains, visit the website www.righttrack.wa.gov.au .

Contact the Public Transport Authority's Community Education Officer on (08) 9326 2055 for information about the Right Track education program.

SPEEDING IN SCHOOL ZONES [TOP]

Don't forget to slow down in the School Zone during term times in the times specified by the signage.

It has been noted that many people who are speeding in school zones are parents dropping off and picking up their child/children from school. By speeding in the school zones you will not only be breaking the law but, more importantly, you will be putting at risk the safety of the children attending your son's school.

YEAR 1 NEWS [TOP]

The boys completed a hectic Term 2, filled with lots of hard work and learning opportunities. We have been looking at the Unit of Inquiry, 'Tell Me A Story' and the boys have revelled in lots of imaginative role play and writing. They especially enjoyed rewriting some famous Fairy Tales and thinking of their own endings; there were some interesting fates for the Big Bad Wolf!

In Library and Art the boys produced their own books and launched them in front of a captive audience of parents; autograph signings were obligatory. We then moved down to an Art Exhibition which included a drama presentation of The Dot. Fraser stole the show with an eye catching red skirt and parents thoroughly enjoyed the show, as well as the beautiful artwork. Student Led Conferences took place and the boys were truly impressive in handling the occasion; they guided parents through their portfolios and were able to explain their work; it was wonderful to see their confidence and the pride that they took in showing their work.

Finally we were lucky enough to have a visit from the author Elaine Forrestal. She captivated the boys with her beautifully illustrated book' Miss Llewellyn Jones", explaining how she writes a book and all of the changes and alterations that take place before the finished result is published. The boys were able to participate in writing and acting out their own adventures for the main character. Again an interesting collection of Ladies' hats stole the show as the boys clamoured to wear them.

We are already looking forward to another busy term with a visit to Scitech planned, lots of weather experiments to conduct not to mention the ongoing trips to PLC to dance with our Buddies there.

It promises to be action packed.

FRIENDLY SCHOOLS AND FAMILIES [TOP]

Scotch College Junior School received a visit from Constable Care on Tuesday 21st of July.

There were two performances, one for the Year 4 and 5 students, whilst the other was directed at Years 1 - 3. The theme was 'how to deal with bullying at school' and addressed physical, verbal and cyber bullying.

The first performance for Years 4 and 5 was an interactive play which included three different bullying situations and showed how each situation could be handled using a cool, calm and assertive response. The second performance was a puppet show which also covered all three forms of bullying and helped to explain the difference between dobbing and telling, as well as laughing with, rather than laughing at another person.

The boys thoroughly enjoyed the performances and gained a great insight into how to treat those around them in similar situations. I would recommend parents to ask your boys about the performances and what information they retained from the experience.

ART NEWS [TOP]

Getting Informed and Inspired

The holidays are always a fabulous opportunity to go and explore the " World of Art" in our community or in other countries and cultures, if travelling away from home. I was privileged to have the task of selecting a book from the WA Art Gallery Bookshop, using the voucher won by Daniel Roden in 5G in the "Design a Chair" competition last term. It was fun absorbing myself in the wonderful visual stimulus, which the bookshop has to offer.

I once heard that if you want to find out about a certain country's history, all you need do is to look at their artwork.

It can tell important stories, give clues and information about their culture (food, dance, music, leisure, work, religious beliefs, engineering, clothing etc) illustrate preferences/values and beliefs, record historical and significant events and show skills and techniques of the time and place.

With that in mind...

I found a perfect resource to add to our library collection titled, "50 ARTISTS YOU SHOULD KNOW". The layout is particularly good, starting chronologically in 1257 with an Italian painter called Giotto Di Bondone who was a great storyteller and master painter/builder, who used dramatic gestures and realistic painted figures to illustrate bible stories. Each artist is represented along a timeline, giving references to other artists of the day and special events happening during that same time period such as wars, space launches, musicians, inventions etc. This helps give the reader an appreciation for what was happening in the world at that time and even give clues about possible influences on the artist's work.

It gives a couple beautiful visual references of their artwork, a summarised timeline of important events in their life, a brief biography of each artist and internet tips offering virtual tours of galleries, additional information and illustrations to refer to.

It is straight forward and easy for students to read and learn about the artists. It continues up to 1997 where it cites the work of David Hockney; an English painter, graphic artist and photographer who is renowned for his colourful, Two-Dimensional landscapes and portraits.

So it is with great pleasure that I add this wonderful resource to the Scotch College Junior School Library. I would also encourage you as parents to refer to artwork in everyday life as a means of informing the next generation. For artwork is not just found in galleries! It is in books, magazines, internet sites, in our clothing, jewellery, food, gardens, houses, media, next door neighbours houses, shops...everywhere! You just have to stop, notice and think about it.

PE NEWS [TOP]

The Year 4 boys will compete in a Walla Rugby carnival at Guildford Grammar School in Week 4 against Christ Church Grammar and Guildford Grammar. Parents are asked to help out on the day by offering to look after teams on the day; it will run from 12:30pm until 2:20pm. If you can help please let me know. There will be space on the bus out to Guildford for your convenience.

In other sports news the Years 5-7 sport fixtures and team lists will continue to be placed on the Scotch website under the quicklinks tool. This is parents first port of call when looking for information relating to Thursday sport. We have also added a venue link on the fixture page, so when you click the venue name a map will pop-up so you know where to go to see your son play. Our next two fixtures are against Guildford this week and then Aquinas, before we head into the Winter Lightning Carnival in Week 4.

Invitation to Staff and Parents to attend a Learning Disability Workshop

Chris Dove, an Occupational Therapist, who is experienced in working with students with a range of difficulties including dyspraxia, visual/perceptual processing problems and fine/ gross motor difficulties will address staff and interested parents in the Junior School Multi Purpose room on Wednesday 29 July from 4.00-5.00pm.

Chris works externally with a number of our boys who show a marked discrepancy between their cognitive ability and what they are able to produce in a written form. This session will provide information about how we accommodate these students in the classroom, the latest computer software available and the current rulings recognised by the curriculum council, on time extensions and the use of laptops in test situations.

INFORMATION LEARNING TECHNOLOGY [TOP]

1:2 Laptop / Virtual Classroom Review

Years 4, 5 and 6 have been experimenting with using laptop computers in class and extending the teaching and learning programme via online virtual classrooms. These technology tools have played a central role in developing 21 st Century skills and extending the possibilities in our teaching and learning programme. The College is therefore considering introducing a 1:1 Laptop programme from 2010 for our Year 5, 6, and 7s. We are currently reviewing the laptop trial and the success of the virtual classroom environment for extending the learning beyond the classroom.

You may be aware that the virtual classrooms allowed boys to continue their learning while the school was closed last term. We had tremendous success with the virtual classroom environment that allowed boys to collaborate from home with their teacher and each other while the school was closed.

The laptop trail has also proved fruitful. Boys enjoy the power of the Apple Macbook that allows them to work in both Mac and Windows environments. This ties in with our ILT philosophy of sourcing the best of everything for the boys to extend their 21 st century skills. Skills such as problem solving, digital literacy and online citizenship tie in very well with our International Baccalaureate philosophy and are integrated into the curriculum and leveraged by the suite of technology tools available for the staff and students

JUNIOR RESOURCE CENTRE [TOP]

Term 3 is the best and most exciting time in the Library. Preparations for Book Week are happening and there will be lots of activities for the boys to look forward to. Book Week takes place from 22 - 28 August. As Scotch has a Boarder's weekend in that time frame the Junior School celebrates the important occasion from Tuesday 25 August until Friday 28 August. The slogan this year is "Book Safari".

There will be activities arranged for all the boys to participate in and the highlight for the boys in Year 1 to Year 4 will be a Book Week Parade on Thursday 27 August. More information will be coming home with the boys in the coming weeks.

FRENCH NEWS [TOP]

In Term 3, the Years 1 & 2 classes are beginning a new French program, called Histoires en action! pour les tout petits. This programme has proven to be a revolutionary new approach to second language instruction. It is based upon the use of stories and music for the teaching of French. Specifically designed stories that are written in the form of plays become the focus for a range of motivating language activities that help students develop confidence and competence in the language as they progress through each story unit.

For young students, the use of stories is a very important way to contextualize vocabulary. It allows language development to be supported and nurtured within the familiar, predictable context of a story that is the focus for the unit's work. Another component of this program is the Gesture Approach, a technique that uses hand signs to help students learn and remember this important vocabulary found in the plays, songs and other activities. Each word is associated with a gesture, so that the language is represented visually and kinesthetically for the benefit of those students who learn best this way. There is an equal, strong emphasis on the development of all four language skills (reading, writing, listening and speaking) through this program; however, for young students, the written word will be gradually introduced and the initial focus will be on oral language acquisition with plenty of pleasant repetition.

Activities are varied, so that students have the opportunity to work individually, in partners, in small groups and as a whole class.

FROM THE HEAD OF MIDDLE SCHOOL [TOP]

Dear Parents

Last week I spoke with the Middle School boys and put Term 3 into a sporting context for them. I referred to this term as the premiership quarter. In sports such as AFL, coaches make a particular point about getting their players to up-the-ante, increase their effort, desire and commitment during the third quarter. It is all about getting ahead, not leaving things to the last minute and arriving at the start of the final quarter on better than even terms and with some momentum. This term I am asking boys to consider the teachers their coaches and this term their premiership quarter. In this quarter I hope to see the boys make the extra effort with their engagement in a lesson, show me greater depth or breadth in their reflection and responses and a raising of the bar in terms of the quality and detail of their presentations. In ten weeks time I hope to arrive at the start of our last quarter with the hard work behind us and a 'Premiership' in sight.

Report cards, portfolios and the start of a new term all came together very neatly last week. Capitalising on this convergence, students in Year 6 and 7, working with their teachers and reflecting on last semester's results will map out some strategic goals and actions for improvement this semester. These goals will come home in draft form during the week for parent input and when complete will be entered into Student Diaries to serve as a stimulus, reminder and focussing point for remainder of the semester. In Week 3 we will be offering the opportunity for parents to come in and speak with teachers about their son's goals and our combined efforts to support them.

CANBERRA TOUR [TOP]

Australian Government Assistance for National Capital Excursion

Students from Scotch College have recently undertaken an educational tour of the national Capital. While on this tour, they participated in a variety of educational programmes focused on Australia's history, culture, heritage and democracy.

The Australian Government recognises the importance of all young Australians being able to visit their national Capital as part of the Civics and Citizenship education. To assist you in meeting the cost of the excursion, the Australian Government is contributing funding under the Parliament and Civics Education Rebate (PACER) programme toward the travel expenses incurred. This contribution will be paid directly to the School upon completion of the excursion. Once this has been received by the School, it will be refunded to you and shown as a credit on your fees statement.

We would like to thank the Australian Government for their support of this programme. The Canberra Tour was a rewarding experience for all students.

PARENT-TEEN CONNECTION COURSE [TOP]

The School Psychologist, Shauna Lipscombe, has arranged for a Parenting Course (3 sessions in total) to be held at Scotch College (The Residence) on Tuesday evenings starting 18 August, 7.00-9.00pm.

This course is aimed at parents of teenagers and will provide practical skills and suggestions to deal with problems and situations such as moodiness, money, clothes, leaving home, sexuality, stealing, drinking and drugs. FRENCH [TOP]

Exchange - Reunion Island 2010

This exchange is open to Year 11 and 12 boys in 2010 or Year 10 boys who intend to continue with French in Year 11 in 2011. It is a four-week state-run exchange where schools throughout the State participate. Students go to Reunion in July and stay with Réunionais families. Australian families are expected to host a Reunion Island student during our summer holiday. Reunion Island is one of France's département. We highly recommend this experience, as a four week immersion experience dramatically enhances students' communicative skills. Every year boys from Scotch participate and come back with very positive comments. This year it is our recommended exchange visit.

Dates: one week on either side of the July holidays in 2010 (4 weeks total)

Cost: $ 2345.00 (subject to airline cost variation)

If interested, please contact your son's French teacher, who will supply you with the necessary application documents. Forms should be handed in to the teacher by Friday 7 August to allow for processing time.

INDIA TOUR [TOP]

The 5 Scotch/St Mary's India tour will go to India in December 2009. The previous tours have all been wonderful experiences and in many cases life changing for the students who have been lucky enough to go. This year we are taking 13 boys and 13 girls. The tour is led by Mr and Mrs Freitag and Mrs Mecham.

The tour is a Community and Service tour primarily, but involves other activities as well. The group lives in an orphanage in Chennai, visits the Taj Mahal in Agra, and works at a primary school in a village outside Jaipur. We ride elephants in Amber, and give money and time to a vet clinic in Jaipur. We work at a girls' school in Delhi, which is for girls from the slum districts. Another significant bonus from the tour is the chance for the boys and girls to work together in a relaxed and natural environment.

It is a great tour, and one where we all work hard together. We have done a lot already to prepare the students and raise funds to donate to those in need. We would like to thank everyone who has helped so far in the fundraising.

DROP OFF AND/OR COLLECTION [TOP]

All boys are asked to be careful crossing any of the roads surrounding both campuses of the school to and from school.

In the interests of safety of Scotch boys and in consideration of our neighbours, I again ask that parents observe the following:

The slip road beside the Junior School in Shenton Road is to set down and pick up boys and is a no parking area. It is most important that cars are not parked there and that car drivers do not wait there to pick up a boy if he is not already present.

The Claremont Ranger has advised that he will be issuing infringement notices to anyone parking in that area.

The canteen car park has a marked circle only for set down and pick up of boys; cars may not wait for boys in this roadway, but from 3pm parents may park on the top oval by the Pool. Outside the circle, cars may be parked at right angles to the line of white posts.

It is unsafe for parents delivering and collecting boys from morning and evening sports' training sessions at the Memorial Ground to drive along the approach road to the Maintenance Department. Parents delivering and collecting boys from Sport should not go beyond the Gooch Pavilion parking area.

2009 REBEL CITY TO SURF [TOP]

Students, staff, OSC and family of the Scotch College community are invited to join in this fantastic event. The City to Surf raises essential funds for the ACTIV Foundation which provides invaluable support and necessary services to people with disabilities.

A team has been registered under Scotch College and you are encouraged to simply add your registration to that of the School team. Last year about 40 boys, parents and staff pushed themselves through the 'pain' barrier with several participants surprising themselves. In addition to helping a worthwhile cause, getting a great adrenalin rush and a wonderful sense of accomplishment, other attractions for our team include:

  • Team race pack collection (avoid the hassle),
  • Barbeque and drinks at the end (you'll need it) and
  • Transport for the team at the end of the race (no queuing up!).

In addition this year several Scotch boys will run the half marathon, a few staff are considering running the marathon and Boarders from Keys House will be manning a drinks stations along the course.

Details of the day and how to register follow.
