Acting Headmaster's Reflections

Simple Complexity

Being in charge of a school of over 1200 pupils and a staff of 200 plus is a daunting and challenging task. It is a complex organization which extends through various groups within the workforce at Scotch, but includes of course all the other interested and involved stakeholders. Boys and parents are massively important, but on top of that are Old Boys, parents of Old Boys, prospective students and so on.

In this complex intertwining of interests this term we have been busy. We have opened a new magnificent building on the Senior School campus, we have won approval to teach the IB Diploma, and we have received the go-ahead to build a multipurpose hall on the JS/MS site, starting work almost immediately. We have had boys go on expeditions to Moray, Ningaloo, Margaret River, various parts of the Bibbulmun Track and have plans in place for India, Tanzania and other parts of the globe. We have had boys playing sport and music all over Perth and Australia, and we have held one of the best school productions you will ever see. Staff members have written over several thousand reports and there have been untold interviews with parents, emails home, and queries answered. We even had swine flu to add interest. The list goes on. It is a complex organization and one trying to provide the best possible outcomes for its stakeholders.

Why then did I write "simple complexity"?

I have been continuing this term the Headmaster's Chats, whereby all members of staff come to the Headmaster's office for a chat, or as one staff member told me....." I'm here to tell you my life story", and she did! I've interviewed staff from all parts of the school, both teaching and non-teaching and it's been both a pleasure and an eye-opener. What does come through from staff is the simple truth that they are working for the good of the boys and the Scotch community. Everyone I have spoken to has talked about doing their bit to help the students. It could be the Grounds, the Health Centre, the IT area, the Human Relations staff, or the LOTE Department. Time and again the simple message comes through about doing what is best for the boys. Underpinning all we do at the College is a strongly held belief that we are in it to help the students in any and every way we can. So simple, so strong a message, built into an organization that is complex, complicated and extensive.

I have enjoyed this role as Acting Headmaster for the Autumn Term, and thank everyone for their support. I feel very proud to have been involved at the top of an organization which has such strong beliefs in what it is doing.

IMPORTANT POINTS TO NOTE [TOP]

CAN YOU BELIEVE THE TERM IS NEARLY OVER?

It is difficult to believe that the term is drawing to a close and we are half way through another year. They boys have worked hard over the past few weeks and we were delighted to share their reflections in our recent Student-Led conferences.

It was lovely to see so many parents at our Years 5-7 Parent V Boy Sport afternoon. I am sure there were some very weary bodies the following day!

As the term draws to a close I would like to take this opportunity to thank our College community for their support and feedback throughout the semester. It has been a joy to join this vibrant school and I look forward to another semester full of wonderful outcomes and positive learning experiences.

FOLLOW UP FOR REPORTING IN THE JUNIOR SCHOOL [TOP]

A reminder to all parents that we will be trialling a new reporting format in Semester 1. We will include a Parent Feedback document with the report and look forward to receiving your responses. Semester 1 reports will be posted home to parents in Week 1 of the Term 2 school holidays. Please ensure that the School has your current postal address on the system. Please contact Julie McClennan in the Senior School Administration if you would like to confirm your current details.

Parents are welcome to make an appointment with Classroom, Specialist and/or Support Staff members, should you have any queries pertaining to your son's progress detailed in the report. We have decided against progressing with compulsory Three-Way interviews at the commencement of Term 3 in preference to individual interviews should they be required. Please contact Junior School Reception, should you wish to make an appointment to meet with our teaching staff.

USE OF STAFF CAR PARK [TOP]

Parents are respectfully reminded not to utilise the staff car park, located off Saunders Street for collection of their son and/or parking. You are welcome to park in car parking areas located near the Boarding House, or on the College Oval. We appreciate your assistance to ensure we maintain a safe environment for the students within our care.

FRIENDLY SCHOOLS AND FAMILIES [TOP]

Recommendations; Principles for Review Meeting

Recommendations to the Principles for Review Meeting in order of priority.

PRINCIPLE 5 - FAMILY LINKS: FS&F Team Rating - 1

Feedback:

  • The school has fortnightly newsletter articles and a Muffin Afternoon to share FS&F programme development.
  • The School is currently investigating the Positive Parenting Programme. A small Parent Resource Centre will be established in either the Deputy Principal's office, the Library or the Support Room to support this programme. Once a collection of resources has been developed, the school will advertise for parental loans.
  • FS&F Coordinator will supply all parents with weekly Friendly Schools and Families Communication Sheets to enhance communication within families about bullying.
  • Muffin Afternoon, Newsletter articles, Resource Centre and further Professional Development and planning for the following year's schedule will all aid to inform parents about the programme and its implementation process.

PRINCIPLE 2 - WHOLE-SCHOOL ETHOS: FS&F Team Rating - 2

Feedback:

  • The Coordinator and Junior School Psychologist have just joined as members of the Whole School Health Awareness Committee. The committee will be focusing on Drug Awareness between the three campuses, but is also looking at aligning the campuses in relation to bullying issues, sex education, stranger danger, road awareness and First Aid.
  • As part of behavioural policies the Junior School will look at time allocations for staff Professional Development (including Ecumenical staff), Shared Concern courses for all staff, and the updating of the Relief Files so that they include bullying-reduction information and consistent classroom behaviour management plans.

PRINCIPLE 4 - CLASSROOM PRACTICE: FS&F Team Rating - 3

Feedback:

  • In preparation for 2010 we will establish a whole-year staff meeting agenda which incorporates professional development on reducing bullying. This would include permanent relief staff meeting on the first day of each year, as well as an instructional process for new staff to the College.
  • FS&F Coordinator to provide definitions and language to utilise in relation to visible Bullying in all classrooms at the commencement of each year and ensure that all classroom rules are consistent.
  • All staff to complete the Enhancing Classroom Practice Professional Development to help in classroom incentives and consistencies. Section 1 of each class unit will address the definitions of bullies, bystanders and participants.
  • The teachers using the classroom programmes will ensure real-life scenarios and experiences will be discussed and taught. The language spoken will also help to encourage participation in dealing with these scenarios and form part of the culture of the school.
  • Teaching and Learning activities will be outlined in the class sets and in Professional Development including the Muffin Afternoons, Newsletters and other publications.

PRINCIPLE 6 - PHYSICAL ENVIRONMENT: FS&F Team Rating - 4

Feedback:

  • We will provide Duty staff with kits of stickers to match the students' house colours. Each sticker will be given when good behaviour is observed and added to class tallies after lunch.
  • We will continue to utilise our methods for teachers to actively record any incidents while they are on duty e.g. carrying around small notepad for specified events.
  • The School Psychologist will conduct a review on the current database to make life easier and increase accessibility for all staff to ensure that incidents can be recorded by all staff members.
  • A Hot Spots survey will be introduced, similar to the 2007 Year 6 survey. Also, as part of the next phase in the programme implementation, a FS&F Survey paper will be distributed to all students and their families.
  • We will set up a small committee of interested staff, parents and students for a playground design club.

PRINCIPLE 1 - POLICY DEVELOPMENT: FS&F Team Rating - 5

Feedback:

  • Investigate what the current Scotch College Policies might provide , then respond accordingly. For the time being a temporary policy for the Junior School has been introduced.
  • A Junior School survey is about to be sent home which will give us a good indication of bullying prevalence and awareness.
  • We will write to FS&F organization and create a booklet for parents, which incorporates a Parent and Teaching Guide - Procedures and Protocols.

PRINCIPLE 3 - STUDENT SUPPORT: FS&F Team Rating - 6

Feedback:

  • The FS&F Team will rollout sessions to address items of significance which have been identified in the report to all members of the School community.
  • The School Psychologist will meet with all staff and run sessions of Method of Shared Concern. Certain staff chosen for further Proffessional Development relating to problem-solving techniques and strategies.

INFORMATION LEARNING TECHNLOGIES [TOP]

This year spelling is a focus in the Junior School. In addition to Smart Words an updated version of the software Wordshark has been introduced. It is a high quality, phonetically based programme, where all common letter patterns and auditory patterns are covered, as well as spelling rules, homophones, alphabet and dictionary skills. An added advantage with this version is that the tailored games and structured word lists are excellent for use on an interactive whiteboard.

Wordshark is designed in such a way that teachers are able to construct differentiated programmes to meet the needs of specific students, or groups of students. Year 2 students have been learning to use the various aspects of Wordshark through lessons on their interactive whiteboard. It is proving to be a highly successful and motivating addition to the spelling programme.

The Year 4 boys competed in a soccer carnival against Guildford and Christ Church at McGillivray on Thursday. From all accounts the boys performed well and displayed some great skills all around the ground. A huge thanks to all the parents who helped out on the day and I look forward to similar responses for the Rugby Carnival in Term 3.

In other sports news the Year 5-7 boys play Wesley on Thursday 2 June to round out the terms fixtures. Winter games continue for the first four weeks of Term 3, we then head into the Athletics season. JUNIOR SCHOOL RESOURCE CENTRE [TOP]

Our budding young authors and researchers in Year 1 invited their parents to the launch of their family books on June 16. They had worked very hard collecting information about their own family by filling in a questionnaire that they had constructed. Information was transferred to their book with an accompanying colourful drawing. Each child had a scanned family photo on the front and a page left for an autograph from the author. The parents enjoyed the first reading of the books and the happy noise coming from the Library illustrated the delight and pride of the boys. The boys then escorted their parents down to their Art Exhibition.

FRENCH NEWS [TOP]

We are coming to the conclusion of yet another great term. The boys have worked very hard and keep exhibiting qualities of knowledgeable learners and fantastic communicators in French class.

The Year 4 boys are now experts on the weather, and even presented weather reports on French speaking countries. The boys firstly had to research the weather for their chosen country, and then write a script for their presentation. After much hard work and many rehearsals, the Year 3 classes presented their play "La vieille dame qui avala une mouche" (There was an old lady who swallowed a fly) to the Year 1 and 2 classes. The play had both French and English narrators as well as animals and a stomach! The complex role of the old lady was beautifully played by Edmund Hall in 3L and Connor O'Sullivan in 3S.

The French Student of the Week is Lewis Orr in 2C. Lewis is a great listener and always works to the best of his ability in class. Lewis displays attributes of a knowledgeable and open-minded learner in French class.

FROM THE HEAD OF MIDDLE SCHOOL [TOP]

Dear Parents

As we head toward the end of semester I would like to take the opportunity to thank you all for your continued support this term.

It has been a term of challenges and achievements, with arguably the highlight of the term our earlier than expected plunge into the deep end of the Virtual Classrooms project. Your positive feedback of this exercise has been widely shared and appreciated.

Your feedback on the items, displays and performances at our last Assembly was also enormously valued, thank you.

Please enjoy a safe holiday.
School resumes for students on Tuesday 21 July.

REPORTS, PORTFOLIOS AND CONFERENCING [TOP]

Semester One reports will be mailed out to parents on Monday 20 July, the first Week of Term Three. Student work sample portfolios will come home with students in Week One of next term and Student Parent Teacher Conferences are scheduled for Tuesday 28 for Year 6, and Thursday 30 July for Year 7.

The combination of student report information, evidence of student engagement and connection via work samples, and the opportunity to identify and plan for improvement by way of the student parent teacher conference helps us get the second half of the year off to a much focussed start. A letter seeking your preferences for times and teacher contact details will come home this week.

HEALTH SURVEY [TOP]

A short survey produced by the Department of Health was sent home and emailed out to Year 5, 6 &7 families last week. The survey seeks feedback on the effects the quarantine and school closure had on families as a result of the H1N1 Swine Flu outbreak two weeks ago. This survey is due back at the Middle School Office this week and will help the Department of Health plan strategically for future pandemics.

HOMEWORK CLUBS [TOP]

Middle School offers students before and after school homework assistance during our Tuesday afternoon and Thursday morning Homework Clubs. Both sessions have two teachers in attendance to offer assistance in any aspect of homework. Run from a computer lab, Homework Clubs are ideal session to do Mathletics work in as well. To date both sessions have been poorly attended with some sessions having only two or three students. Tuesday afternoon session runs from 3.30pm - 4.30pm Thursday morning session runs from 7.45am - 8.30am.

ART, DESIGN & TECHNOLOGY DISPLAY [TOP]

Two displays in the foyer at last Friday's Assembly represented the culmination of a semester's work for Year 7 Art and Year 6 Design and Technology students.

The glazed model clay cars and the polished boomerangs are the end products of a design, plan and create process in both of these subject areas. I have no doubt you have heard how popular both of these hands on subjects are.

In Semester Two the Year 6 and 7 will continue working with the design cycle as they swap over in these two subject areas.

Orienteering
The State Underage Orienteering Championships were held at John Forrest National Park last week and Scotch College competed in the 12 year old event.

In a field of 45, Scotch did exceptionally well with Reece Grant finishing second and Jackson Fong, Evan Ledger, Jacob Coulson, Ben Hutcherson, Kelvin Wang and Toby Griffiths finishing in the Top 10. A special vote of thanks must go to Cam Shepherd who helped prepare the boys so well for this event.

Parents V Students
There were some soggy pitches, the wafting smell of Dencorub and a general air of excitement on the ovals last week as the annual Parents V Boys winter sports matches were held. A special vote of thanks goes to all parents that donned the sporting clobber, ran onto the field and helped provide the boys with a much anticipated and talked about sporting clash.

It is events such as this that demonstrate the depth of support, if not sporting talent, the parent body offers our school and adds richness to life here at Scotch that is remembered long after the strains and bruises have gone.

Regards
Richard Ledger

WINTER SPORTS' AFTERS EVENTS [TOP]

Year 11 and Year 12 Parent/Student Meeting

A meeting with the Headmaster will be held for all Year 11 and Year 12 parents and students in the Chapel to discuss Winter Sports' Afters Events. A form regarding support at Afters Events has been sent out to parents by the School Captain. They are urged to return this as soon as possible.

SECOND LANGUAGE STUDY VISITS [TOP]

We are very pleased to offer study visits to boys wishing to study languages in Years 11 and 12. Various routes for this exist and Year 10 boys might consider applying for one of the following once they have made their decisions for Year 11. Current pupils in Year 11 have much to gain from spending 2 or 3 weeks in the target language country. The cultural richness and the immersion in language provide an unparalleled boost to senior studies and boys are encouraged to check with those in Year 12 who have gained a huge amount.

At present there are proposed Scotch Indonesian and Spanish visits for April 2010, or the La Réunion Exchange program for French students - (applications open at the start of Winter term 2009). Students wanting longer exposure might consider using the Summer Holidays with NACEL.

Finally, some students may also like to host foreign students in the Winter Term (as three families are this year). Experience shows us that there is a huge improvement in both motivation and enjoyment when a student comes into real contact with a new culture for an extended period.

MEDITATION FOR SENIOR SCHOOL STUDENTS [TOP]

A mindfulness meditation course will be run for interested Years 11 and 12 students next term.

This is a meditation technique which is easy to learn and to practise in our everyday life and its benefits have been well documented.

It will help boys develop:

  • concentration for study
  • relaxation techniques and
  • a positive and confident attitude towards all aspects of their life (study, sport, socialising, communication, developing meaningful relationships with others).

The course will be run on Mondays 3.45pm to 4.45pm, from 27 July until 21 September (with a midterm break on 24 August). The cost of the eight week course is $160 per student which covers the cost of the lessons as well as the materials given to students.

Numbers are strictly limited.

To register please contact Cherie FitzGibbon, School Secretary (The Residence), Ph: (08) 9383 6871 or Email: fitzca@scotch.wa.edu.au.

MATHEMATICS - YEAR 11 AND 12 ASSESSMENT POLICY [TOP]

Recently we have had a number of boys who have been asking to sit our Friday afternoon mathematics assessments at an alternative time. With many students enrolled in one course, it is vital for consistency and comparability that the students sit the assessment concurrently and under the same conditions. The boys have been notified previously of our assessment policy, but I feel it is important to reiterate this policy again so that everyone is fully informed.

Absence from any assessment will receive a mark of zero, unless a medical certificate is shown to your teacher.

Students who cannot attend the assessment because of their involvement in cadets or maritime studies only, must see Mr Newman three days before the assessment so that he can make alternative arrangements. No other excuse (ie driving lesson, orthodontist appointment, house activities) will be accepted.

CAREERS [TOP]

Year 12 Parents and Students

The applications for further study at either TAFE or University have NOT been requested by the respective tertiary institutions at this stage. In August students will be given the 2010 TISC Guide that will outline all the procedures and dates that are relevant to the application process and beyond. Mr Frusher will also be talking to the students as a group and explaining the TISC Guide, together with the application process. In early September, Mr Frusher will be conducting one-on-one interviews with all Year 12 students to check each application and to offer advice prior to applications being sent online.

At this stage Year 12 students should have received a Prospectus from each of the Universities, and guest speakers from Curtin, TAFE and Murdoch. UWA, Notre Dame and Edith Cowan will visit in Term 3.

What can you do???

  • Discuss various courses in the prospectuses that may be of interest to your son.
  • Gather more information by visiting university websites, or requesting further information from universities.
  • Attend university Open Days that are advertised in each prospectus and in this newsletter.
  • Be positive; don't panic (yet) and communicate with as many people as possible.

WINTER SPORT AND INJURY [TOP]

The winter season is well under way and unfortunately we have witnessed a significant number of injuries, particularly in Rugby and Football. It seems an appropriate time to reiterate the School's guidelines on returning to sport following concussion, and the recommended management of soft tissue injury.

Concussion

Concussion is defined as a trauma induced alteration in mental status. It may or may not include loss of consciousness - amnesia and confusion are the hallmarks of concussion. This may occur immediately or be delayed.

The School policy is that any player who has sustained any period of unconsciousness or exhibits any sign of concussion must be removed from play immediately and seen by the medical staff present at the ground or at the School Health Centre if during training.

The School follows the Sports Medicine Australia guidelines for concussion. At a minimum, the player is not to return to play until free of symptoms for one week. Longer restrictions apply to severe or subsequent concussions. Medical clearance must be obtained before resuming training or competition. Any student who sustains a head injury, with or without concussion, must not train or play for 72 hours after the incident. This is in line with all other PSA schools.

Helmets and Mouthguards

It is a requirement that mouthguards are worn not only for all contact sports fixtures but also at all training sessions. They are also highly recommended for Physical Education sessions if these include activities involving physical contact. Not only do custom fitted mouthguards have a major impact on reducing dental injuries and jaw fractures but there is some evidence to suggest that proper fitting mouthguards can also reduce the severity of concussion injuries.

Whilst helmets used in specific sports such as rugby and football have been shown to reduce the incidence and severity of lacerations and skull fractures they DO NOT protect against concussion.

Soft Tissue Injury Management:

The acronym RICER is used to treat these injuries and is the key to faster and more complete recovery from injury:

RICER stands for: Rest, Ice, Compression, Elevation and Referral.

R: REST - the player should cease the activity, rest in a comfortable position with the affected body part supported and immobilised if possible.

I: ICE - an icepack should be applied to the injury site for 20 minutes every two hours for the first 2-3 days following injury. This will reduce swelling, pain, muscle spasm and secondary injury. * DO NOT apply ice directly to the skin as it may cause burns.

C: COMPRESSION - apply a firm wide elastic bandage or Tubigrip/Tensogrip over the injured area. This will help to reduce swelling, internal bleeding and pain.

E: ELEVATION - where possible raise the injured part above the level of the heart. This will reduce bleeding, swelling and pain.

R: REFERRAL - to a qualified professional such as doctor or physiotherapist for precise diagnosis and ongoing management.

SPORTS FIXTURES AND RESULTS [TOP]

Weekly sport reports detailing results and a brief summary of the relevant fixtures are available on the Scotch website, within Sport Notices under News. This information is posted on the Thursday prior to each fixture.

WINTER SWIMMING

Winter Swimming will start in Week 6 of Winter Term.

It will run on Tuesday and Thursday mornings from 6.30am -7:45am at Claremont Pool in Davies Road. All boys wishing to take part must see Mr Gabriels beforehand. There will be no bus to school in the mornings. As the pool is only a five minute walk away, boys will be expected to walk to school. Boys are to have showers and get changed into school uniform at Claremont Pool. As there is a good chance of rain, an umbrella and raincoat are advised.

BREAKFAST

The canteen will be open for breakfast at 8:00am every morning.

Senior boys will be in charge of escorting Junior School boys to school after training. School bathers must be worn at training and a water bottle is compulsory. All boys are welcome and we expect to see boys who want to be in the swim team in 2009/2010 seasons at these sessions.

PLAYING FIELDS: VEHICLE DROP OFF

While it is tempting to drive around to the Maintenance area at the playing fields, particularly for early morning training when it is still dark, parents should not attempt to do so as it becomes very congested for the Maintenance Department and is dangerous. Please drop your sons off in the main car park or near the grass tennis courts, and avoid both the congestion and the danger that could be caused near the Maintenance area.

TANZANIA EXPEDITION 2010 [TOP]

There are still a few places available on the Tanzania Trip which will take place in July next year. During the trip, boys will work along-side girls from Presbyterian Ladies College to continue the renovation of classrooms at Matipili village, north of Dar es Salaam. They will also climb the spectacular Mr Meru and visit the World Heritage listed wildlife reserve - Ngorongoro Crater. This is an adventure, a personal and group challenge and an immensely rewarding experience for all. It is also hugely enjoyable. The links that both Colleges have established with Matipwili ensures that the group receives a warm reception and an opportunity to witness African village life at close quarters. Boys who will be in Years 11 and 12 during 2010 are encouraged to come on this trip. There is minimal impact on TEE preparation - but the potential for significant personal growth. Please contact Mr Bill Cordner at wjcordner@scotch.wa.edu.au for more information.

  • Barbeque and drinks at the end (you'll need it) and
  • Transport was made available for the team (no queuing up!).

In addition this year several Scotch boys will run the half marathon, a few staff are considering running the marathon and Boarders from Keys House will be manning two drinks stations along the course.

Details of the day and how to register follow.

MOTHERS' AUXILIARY [TOP]

Film Morning

Thank you to all those who braved the weather and the dreaded swine flu, and made the movie morning such a success. Following a delicious morning tea, the adrenaline was soon pumping, as we watched the action filled movie "State of Play". A special thanks to those mothers who made chicken sandwiches, biscuits, mini cup cakes, served morning tea and sold raffle tickets. I would also like to thank the parents and members of our local community who generously donated raffle prizes, to help us raise funds for the boys at Scotch College: Janet Kirkby, Jane Ponsonby, Ezyway Supermarket Swanbourne, Deli Chi Chi Mt Claremont, O2H Nedlands, Book Caffe Swanbourne, Cloud 9 Dry Cleaning Claremont, Liquor Barons Claremont, Tennis Only Nedlands, and Cottesloe Golf Club Pro Shop.

Coffee, Cake & Conversation at Coomberdale

The inaugural trip to the district of Coomberdale was a huge success and thoroughly enjoyed by all who attended. A big thank you to Mr Phil Williams who drove the bus and entertained us with his eclectic choice of 80's music at a rather loud volume! A beautiful lunch was served at the Magpie Café. The room was filled with friendly chatter as a group of 35 city and country women spent a couple of hours getting to know one another, sharing common interests and comparing notes about their sons at Scotch College. Thank you once again to our gorgeous host Louise House and to Marilyn Freitag for having the foresight and for taking the time to bring this lovely day to fruition.

I hope that this day will continue to become a regular event on the Scotch College Calender. I would encourage all Mums who have the opportunity, to attend this day as it is a lovely way to get to know other mothers, particularly the mothers of our Boarders at Scotch.

Next meeting

Our next meeting is on 27 July in the Gooch Pavilion at 9.00am. Our guest speaker will be Ms Chrissy Gamble, Head of Junior School. All are most welcome.

The progression of time also means that our Year 12 parents are also moving on and so we are keen for their role to be filled by the up and coming year groups. If you are interested in assisting with the activities of the Support Group, please contact Geoff Ross at Waterpolo@scotch.wa.edu.au

FOPAS (Friends of Performing Arts at Scotch) [TOP]

We would like to say a huge thank you to all the parents and siblings and friends who assisted in so many ways with the production of "One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest". We had help with many tasks, including distributing posters, set construction, managing costumes, doing makeup, assisting with Front of House, doing Bump Out, and many other tasks. Your assistance has made this production very special, for your boys and for all involved.

Congratulations to Mr. Haese and Ms Simpson and all the crew and cast of "One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest", for this year's outstanding Senior Years Production.
